Hello Internet! *Tries to play Team Fortress 2* Bye Internet! :-(

Hi guys, me again, with another problem. It's concerning my internet connection and Steam. Here I go...

My kit is an vm(ntl)255 modem. For the wireless i use the Netgear Router provided with the Virgin Media Wireless Kit. I also (Stupid me...) installed the software with the wireless kit. Things were okay, i could surf the net, play a game, until...

I start up steam, look for a server to play Team Fortress 2 on, and suddenly my internet goes off the moment I press "Refresh". Me, thinking this is just a hiccup, reset the modem and router respectively. Then I notice it's not a hiccup. It does it again, and again, and again. I'd very much like to play the games I paid for, and something here has messed up. I've not changed anything in any way to cause it to do this. Here's a ping test and trace route.

Pinging www.bbc.net.uk [212.58.253.75] with 32 bytes of data:

Are you going through a router?? If so then youll probably find that MAX CONNECTIONS is being triggered as it pings all the available game servers...I had the same problem play UT

You can't change the max connection limit of a Netgear WGR614. That said, I use one and have very little problem torrenting with a few hundred open connections. Try setting dmz for the lan IP your pc is on, although even with all connections being freely routed to that local IP, it is still possible that the router will block ports even with dmz set and packet inspection (SPI) turned off. Really they are pretty crap routers.

This is to do with the MAX connections on your router, Im guessing this ONLY happens when you just refresh the WHOLE server list instead of just a few? It will refresh a few servers then your internet seems to dissconect? IE cant load webpages etc...

Its the memory they put in routers if its hardly any memory then it will have a smaller max connections...

Either connect it directly to your PC from your modem or get a decent GAMING router.

Luckily I have a back up router (My Buffalo)

I was using the netscape so i could sail through easily with VM Tech Support (Stop them signing me off with "It's your computer"). Well, now it's worse, there's no point using it :/

Re: Hello Internet! *Tries to play Team Fortress 2* Bye Internet! :-(

err.. I have the same problem.. Sort of, I have a netgear wgr614 also and experience the same problems as you.
My brother also uses the router, but his internet is fine, when he refreshes server lists etc. it puts my internet off, not his.

I'm guessing the router is crap and there is no way to fix it, but why is his internet fine?

I use this router myself and find it to be great, maybe you have a dodgy unit. Or it is known that VM install a custom firmware on it which may be rubbish.

Try my set up instructions below for the Virgin WGR614 as they do work.
-----------------------------------------------

First you need to fully uninstall the software from your computer, by first going to the system tray by the clock on desktop and exiting the wireless manager, then go to start > control panel >unistall programs> now unistall the wireless manager from here then exit .

Next ensure the router is on and take a pen or a paperclip and look on the back of the router and you will see a small round hole big enough for the pen to go into press the reset button in this hole for approx 10 seconds then switch off the router and modem

------------------------------------------------------------

Quick router set up for the V9

connect your laptop direct to the router in port 1to 4>open internet explorer>in the address bar put http://192.168.1.1/ when the login screen appears put in the username : virgin and the passphrase : password> the Netgear router page will now appear, down the left side click on Wireless settings>now name your network, something you remember and replace the passphrase with a new one at least 8 characters long and click apply, wait for it to finish updating and close the page.

disconnect cable from laptop and router, ensure inbuilt wireless switched on, go to system tray and look for connect to a network icon ( not the virgin icon ) click it and find your network name, click connect put in your passphrase and when it says connected open a browser page and you should be connected.

Or if on a Mac

You need to go to the Airport icon (fan) on the top right in the menu bar - make sure it's on and and then choose your network
