what wireless Router to buy

my laptop, vista, has an Intel® Pro Wireless 3945 802.11a/b/g Mini-Card.

I'm on VM 2mb BB.

What wireless router would you guys recommend? I think the wireless card in my laptop can only support speeds of up to 54Mbps? So would there be any point of getting a router that can do faster speeds or has N draft?

thanks in advance for any helpful advice!

Re: what wireless Router to buy

if you are on a 2meg connection then any 54G router will suffice, there is no point getting an N series router with the slow (compared to the 20meg which normally does need an N series router and adapater) connection

My mate has a better signal with his N router and no longer has any dropouts. Depending on how close you are to the router then a G router will be more than enough in most circumstances.

Re: what wireless Router to buy

I got a linksys a/b/g router and all has been fine throughout the entire house and in the back garden (the house was a 1940's build). The newer the house (generally the thinner the walls) the better the signal gets through and so a G router should be fine.

Re: what wireless Router to buy

thanks for your replies. I think I'm going to get an N router after all. I found the Netgear WNR834B for £63. http://www.purelygadgets.co.uk/showp...425&wysiwyg=10

For the sake of an extra £20 or so I figure I may aswell get this then if/when I upgrade my BB speed i'll be ready!

Wirelessly through a Linksys WRT54G router (N not required for 20Mb):

Tue, 6 May 2008 13:24:15 UTC

Test 1: 1024K took 452 ms = 2265.5 KB/sec, approx 18668 Kbps, 18.23 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 425 ms = 2409.4 KB/sec, approx 19853 Kbps, 19.39 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 424 ms = 2415.1 KB/sec, approx 19900 Kbps, 19.43 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 903 ms = 2268 KB/sec, approx 18688 Kbps, 18.25 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 19277 Kbps, 18.83 Mbps

Re: what wireless Router to buy

that will depend on signal strength etc, i couldnt get anywhere over 13meg on my linksys due to the house being old with proper solid walls
