lost connection

on Saturday my son set up the belkin FSD7230-4 router and everything was fine-connection to laptop and main pc running ME.this morning when i switched the pc on i hadn't a connection.all the lites on the modem were ok and i have a connection on the laptop.i've been faffing about unplugging the router/modem but i still cannot get a connection on my pc.checked device manager and there are no exclamation marks at all and i'm lost.we've spent 5 hours trying to sort it.never having had a prob with the connection on my pc except when there have been issues with the network.now i tried taking the router out of the equasion and just had the pc and modem but still no connection.

Re: lost connection

So, to get this straight....
You have a desktop PC running Windows ME that wont connect and a laptop running ???????? that will connect? What OS is the laptop? Are you connecting with a cable or wirelessly? Does a cable work and wireless not?

Re: lost connection

ME is a notoriously iffy Operating System. Numerous things could be wrong, including whether, since this is clearly an older PC, that it can actually support the wireless card you are using.

Presumably your laptop is running correctly, connected via the router to the modem?

Assuming the kit is compatible, check the wireless card is still showing as installed. Maybe remove and reinstall the drivers. Is there antivirus or other software blocking it? Is the operating system fully patched, and was there a recent patch applied that could have blocked stuff?

I take it your router is a wireless router? How is the laptop and desktop connected to the router? Do you use cables or do you connect wirelessly?

Re: lost connection

my son said that there were no error messages in screen when he set it up.like i said i did have a connection to both the pc and laptop but i only have one to the laptop now.i eventually switched the pc off shortly after i posted tonite so will have to check that the card is still down tomorrow but i know that nowt abnormal is showing up in device manager.avg and zone alarm not blocking owt to my knowledge and as for patches MS don't support ME now.it's a belkin FSD7320-4 wireless router and as for how they're rigged tgether there is a grey ethernet cable connected to the modem and router blue ethernet connected to tower case

Re: lost connection

So sounds like you're connecting via cables and not wirelessly. So that rules out wireless related issues or wireless adaptor card issues.
Back to basics.....
It could be a faulty port on either your PC or the router. Could be a faulty cable(s). When the cable is plugged in, is there are 2 lights either side of where the cable is plugged in. Is one light solid and the other flicker occasionally?
Can you install the device that is being used on the laptop on to the PC? This will test if you can get it to work wirelessly. Win ME may not support the device though.
