Re: buying a laptop

Hi 2008 Paul, If you want say, a secondhand one, but a decent one, try www.gumtree.com, you can advertise free of charge, but if you want a brand new one, be careful, l will tell you why, my son bought one for £500.00 from a well known store, begins with a C, he bought this three years ago, and would you believe it, he is still paying for it, with all the add on credit etc, so be careful, but if you do get one, try and get insurance to cover for it, as my son's screen went, and it costs £95.00 to repair, but he had insurance on it, best of luck.

Re: buying a laptop

Dell have some for around £300
If possible get XP and not vista.
Vista installed on budget laptops just kills the machine.

Pretty bad advice to advise someone to pay a third of the cost of purchase on insurance.

£300 is more than enough to go shopping for an everyday laptop. Insurance on a laptop would only be value at £15 or so.

Insurance policies for gap insurance on cars costs trade £60.

Miele were doing 5 year extended warranty on their washers for £15 at one stage.

Extended warrantys only benefit the insurance co.

Re: buying a laptop

Insurance is a gamble. But when you take into account the capital cost, and the depreciation on IT kit, in that within 3 years most would regard it as obsolete, I'd say avoid insurance. However, if you must buy the thing on finance, then insurance for the finance term is probably more essential as you wouldn't want to be paying off something that has busted.

Re: buying a laptop

Speaking of laptops (as many are right now).

What is faster?

Intel Pentium Processor T2330
(1.6GHZ, 533 MHZ FSB, 1 MB Cache)
or

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5450
(1.66 GHz, 667 MHz FSB, 2 MB Cache)

I'm thinking the T5450 will be?

Most certainly, higher clock speed, higher front side bus speed, more cache
