First thing to ask is what model Netgear and is it a 'Cable' route, rather than ADSL.
If it's an ADSL router, the first PC connected could get a connection but the next wouldn't.

Re: wireless connection ok but no internet

In Internet Explorer, check Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections

Make sure "Never dial a connection" is selected then click "LAN Settings" and make sure "Automatically Detect Settings" is unchecked.

Finally, if you have IE7 (the one with tabs) then go to Tools and check that "Work Offline" isn't ticked. If you have IE6 (the one without tabs) go to File and check that "Work Offline" isn't ticked.

One other thing (although assuming you "pinged" Yahoo via it's name this won't count) - as well as an IP address, are you getting valid DNS servers?

Re: wireless connection ok but no internet

No, 255.255.255.0 is the subnet mask. To see all your IP settings, run a command prompt by clicking "start" then "run", type in cmd and press enter.

In the prompt, type ipconfig /all and press return. You will get a long list of settings - look for the DNS server(s), note the number and then in the prompt type ping followed by the DNS server address and hit return. You should get 4 lines with a reply. If you do then ignore the DNS issue as this would equate to a working DNS setup.

Default gateway is the same as DHCP and DNS server

Re: wireless connection ok but no internet

Ah right, so your router is forwarding DNS requests. Just to rule out any issue there, look at your router settings and note the DNS servers on the Internet (or WAN) connection. Change your client's DNS server to the one noted from the router's DNS.

Re: wireless connection ok but no internet

Try logging into your router and checking the settings in there. It should be the same as the 'default gateway' so open a browser and enter address
http://192.168.1.1
Let's see if you can talk to the router.

One step at a time.

Also, can you give us a list of the DNS settings shown by ipconfig /all
There should be at least 2 addresses shown last in the list after default gateway.

I am a bit of a novice when it comes to all of this configuration lark, how do I find router settings?
I am comparing all the ipconfig settings against my laptop and to be honest all of the settings appear to be the same except the ip address the laptop ends with a 4 and the desktop ends with a 3

Re: DaiNasty's response

Fair point but I think the responses he's given so far indicate the client can see the router (IP settings provided indicate DHCP, DNS and Gateway as the same address and DNS has returned a successful ping).

To rule out a DNS issue in a simpler way, try the following address in your browser:

http://208.69.34.231/

You should see the Google homepage.
