what is happening with Newsgroups
I am using newsgroups tonight on a 20 meg connection but I am only getting about 1.20 MB/s which is about half what I normally get..
I don't think I am capped as I have only been downloading since 21.15 tonight.
Is anyone else having problems with giganews or is it Virgin playing tricks on me?

I am on Astraweb and can download 20mbit full rate. I've had no problems on my connection tonight.

Re: what is happening with Newsgroups
You all seem to be having more luck than me, I've just tried a speedtest using Giganews tester and I'm getting the dizzy speed of 1kbps, yes thats right 1kbps! I've had pigeons that can get back from France quicker than that. The whole experience for the last few days can only be described as abysmal!
Do I get a prize for the slowest connection ever recorded?

I was under the impression that all these UBR upgrades would stop this congestion, or it that just propaganda on VM's part to try gain the trust of its subscribers?

Re: what is happening with Newsgroups
Hi Ermintrude - I've been having the same problem. It seems back to normal now though. Probably just a weekend 'thing'.

Re: what is happening with Newsgroups
If you're using the Blueyonder server you could try their new binary server which is in beta
news.virginmedia.com
It was originally set to only allow 5 connections but that's been upped now....i'm using 7.
It's also supposed to have increased retention to 7 days as well.
It is a beta tho so i would expect there's a high probability of some problems along the line.,in fact there's already been some but they've not affected me.....so far.

The same problem for the last 3-4 days.
20M line - maximum 1.2kbps down from astraweb.
Very annoying.

Re: what is happening with Newsgroups
Getting an amazing 74kb/s from usenet-news. Are VM throttling? Because it would seem as though they are.
