TV over broadband

I've seen those devices (one I believe is Pinnacle HDTV TV to Go) which purport to allow you to watch TV from anywhere via broadband. Are there any products of this ilk that work with Virgin Media tv, how so they work, and can channels be changed remotely by the person viewing via the net or do they just have to watch whatever channel the Virgin Media box happens to be on at any given time?
