Limited Connectivity
Was look as a router problem last night for someone but couldnt solve the issue
They have a D-LINK DSL-G624T router, a desktop PC hardwired and a Laptop connected wirelessly both running xp, both connect fine.
They now have a Vaio laptop running vista home premium and what ever you do you dont ever appear to connect to the router properly. The signal strength is fine but you only ever get limited connectivity.
Google seems to throw up threads stating the router is not vista compatible but i find this hard to believe as the OS should be irrelavent.
Any ideas??

Re: Limited Connectivity
If the laptop is reporting a connection to the wlan, but limited connectivity, it would suggest the router is not handing out an IP to that system. Has the the owner configured enough DHCP addresses for the three systems? If the other laptop is not running, does the Vaio get an IP?
Not sure what the interface is like on the D-Link, but it should have a status page to show active connections - what does that say about the Vaio.
Have they tried setting a suitable fixed IP on the Vaio, eg if the router is on 192.168.1.1, assign an IP of 192.168.1.220, netmask 255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.1.1?

Given that they have never logged onto the router admin page they cant have changed anything so i would expect that it is giving out enough addresses

Never logged onto the router admin page?
There's the problem then.
Their wireless connection is unprotected and every scrote within an appropriate radius is currently using it, thereby tying up all of their IP addresses!
Seriously, if they've done any securing at all make sure they haven't enabled MAC filtering.

It did have WEP enabled but this was enabled out of the box.

Re: Limited Connectivity
Hmmm.....
I'd suggest resetting the router, and rebuilding the security profile from scratch.
Set it up for WPA (if all the devices will support it) and then ensure that all the wireless clients have the right settings.
It certainly sounds like a misconfiguration somewhere either on a client or on the router, I often find that setting up again from scratch is quicker than trying to work out what's gone wrong where.
I saw an interesting case a few months back, the firmware on the router had become corrupted and wasn't accepting any new clients. We had to flash the router's firmware to get the thing up and running properly again. Bit extreme though

Re: Limited Connectivity
no amount of reseting made any difference. Replaced router and problem was solved
