Talking Crap speeds with my Dlink router

I am using a Dlink wireless router DI- 524 Model and a cable modem from vm Using a wired connection with the router or without I get full speed 20Mb but with wireless I am getting 4Mb and I cant understand why I tryed changing the channels and no change has anyone had this problem or do they know of any tweaks. I have used tcp optimzer and no change this is really annoying me.

One thing I did think it could be as my pc desk is metal but I get full strength tryed updating firmware but the router failed to do that I am really stuck so please can some help me.

Thank you DL

You haven't got it set to 11b speed or anything like that?

Certainly sounds like the throughput you'd typically see with b.

It's worth checking the capabilities of your NICs and how they are configured as well as the router itself which is probably set to auto negotiate by default.

Re: Crap speeds with my Dlink router

Yes but if the router is only throwing out B speeds it wont matter what card you have in your laptop Usually it should be set to B+G.

Re: Crap speeds with my Dlink router

well even 11B will give you a top rate of 11Mbit/s real speed, , call it an average of say 8 or 9 on a good link , so its still far short at the reported 4Mbit/s.

iv been thinking about your problem but didnt find the time to check some ideas and reports yet.....

is there a 3rd party firmware you can drop in there to check or even an updated official firmware perhaps?, i didn t even have time to check that option, take a look perhaps, and make sure the MTU is at 1500.

and temp turn off all your security and retest.

it might be the routers CPU is weak and cant keep up the throughput.

you should be seeing at least the 8 to 11 mbit range with it all turned off even if the wireless lan is switching to 11b.

off the top of me edd, you sure the USB is using USB2 as its interface and not the old 11mbit USB1.1?.

but even then, cpu bound USB1.1 would give you better than 4Mbit/s

Re: Crap speeds with my Dlink router

all depends on what speed you connect to the router, i can connect to my router at 54mbps and get about 12.5mbps avg download speed on my 20meg connection, but if it drops to about 36 or 24 then the speed also drops, what are the signal levels like and what speed are you connecting to the router at?

Re: Crap speeds with my Dlink router

Is there a varient of the RouterTech or Acorp.RU firmware for your Dlink?

I know Darkwolf modifys the RT firmwares for some of the DSL routers but not sure about the cable ones....

Mind you had to stop using my d-link router since It couldn't handle the workload i placed on it used to lock up regularly and I tried various different firmwares think it was a heat issue since I used to leave it on 24/7 and it had to work quite hard at times (xbox live + downloading + surfing + streaming, and I had QOS rules set)
