That router should work fine with Virgin Media cable. It should be simple to set up out of the box. Simply power off the modem and computer (s), plug ethernet between router (WAN) and modem, plug ethernet between router (LAN) and PC(s) or consoles. Start modem, let settle, start router, let settle, start PC(s) / Consoles. Make sure PC(s) browser and network card settings are set to auto. Once you have wired setup, then you can configure the wireless.

For most people the standard firewall in the router is enough. Tweak settings only if you find something can't communicate properly such as torrent software. Then you might need to open ports.

As for wireless you do need to set some security on the router. Ideally enable WAP encryption, if this is supported by your wireless devices, alternatively look at WEP.

As for viruses on the PS3, no idea.

I use Linksys WRT54GS (802.11g), the same as you. And I use Virgin (NTL) cable modem as well.
Except recommendation upstairs, you may need to hide your route's name and active wireless MAC filter. This gives you better security against hacker.
In terms of firewall, I found the build-in one is not good. I was hacked immediately after I connected a old laptop running W2K. So I installed Zonealarm in each of my desktop/laptop. I also running AVG to against virus but I am not sure how to deal with PS3.
If you have any issue to do with set up your route, you may search thread started by me because I asked a few questions regarding how to and received a lot suggestions which led me though the mess. Surely you can get it running as you asked a correct question at a correct place!
