Does anyone use digital photo frames?

Just wondered whether anyone had any experience with these - we were looking at getting one for a present but I've seen mixed reviews as to what they're like. They've come down in price quite a bit over the last year or so but I'm a bit worried that might be tied to a drop in quality.

Any thoughts or recommendations would be most appreciated!

Hmm, how shall I put this? Personally, I think a digital photo frame is an incredibly naff idea.

I suppose it's one of those things where you want to make sure the intended recipient would actually like one.

My friend has one it look very cool, it's only 6 x 4 but he has 100's of pic's of his kids on it.

Weve got a 6*4 philips one, its pretty good, quite happy with it. Good way of showing pics off that would either never get printed or sit in an album

I think they can make an excellent present for people to put pictures of there kids on it and give to a relative, who may not be able to see them as often as they would like.

No offence taken! The reason we're looking at it isn't so much for the sake of a digital frame itself but what the pictures put onto the stick for display will mean. A digital photo frame at provides a way to put on display all of those pictures that otherwise would sit in an album somewhere.

From digging around I've seen a load of stuff saying not to get a low resolution but nothing actually indicating what sorts of resolutions are good for which size frames.

Wicked_and_crazy - Do you know which model the Phillips frame is you have? They're supposed to general be a good brand for these from what I've seen.

We bought one for my Mum for her birthday this year and she loved it. I think it was this one... http://www.ebuyer.com/product/127851 ...which now includes a 512 mb SD card that it didn't when I bought it in the summer.

We bought an el-cheapo one from Ebuyer for 30 quid. It's 'OK', the resolution isn't that great but fine for putting on a mantlepiece, just not good when you're looking too closely. The interface is super clunky but we've set it up for my mother in law so she just needs to switch it on and it cycles through the pictures we've put on of her grand daughter.

Every time we see her, we put some more photos on for her, she's now got about 400 pictures. She thinks it's some kind of witchcraft that we can do this for her :-)

currently i think they are all ugly and useless. But perhaps next year we will see improvments.

Jon - Do you know what resolution it runs at? There are quite a lot of 7" frames that run at 480x284 which I have a feeling may be the "isn't that great" resolution you menion. If that's the case I'd rather spend a bit more and get the 800x600 frames.

To be honest, I wasn't sure what the resolution was...I read through the customer reviews of the ones I liked the look of and that came out best at the time. I loaded a stack of photos (of varying sizes) onto an SD card, with no cropping or tweaking of any sort and they all looked fine when playing as a slideshow...albeit with some of them having black borders or letter-boxed, depending on the size of the original.

Yep, that's the resolution of the frame we got. Don't get me wrong, maybe I'm comparing the photos to how they look on my PC screen or printed out. If you're a couple of feet away, that resolution on a 7" screen will look great. It's only if you are holding the frame and flicking through the photos it can look a little ropey
