Wireless router in loft?
Hi there,
Just a quick questeion. The cable connection in my parents house is up in the loft with there PC. Now due to them getting on a bit they want to move there PC down stairs and go wireless. So if I put a wireless router up in the loft will the signal transmit downstairs to a wireless device?
Thanks,
Matthew.

Re: Wireless router in loft?
In a word, yes.
However, you might find the signal is weak, depending on the age of the house etc.
Plus, with your parents getting on a bit, they won't want to be going up to reset the router all the time. I find wireless routers tend to crash a fair amount. You are better off running a long ethernet cable if you want it to be very reliable and fast. If they have 20Mbps (I assume they won't) then they will definately need a cable to get the best out of it. Wireless b/g just can't cope with the throughput.

Re: Wireless router in loft?
Have you considered using a HomePlug device, e.g. http://www.solwise.co.uk/net-powerline.htm?
It basically turns your electrical sockets into network ports.
Oh, and welcome to the forum!

Re: Wireless router in loft?
I don't think my WRTG54 has ever crashed in the xxx amount of years I've had it. I guess the cheap and nasty type will due to overheating, some wireless network devices seem to produce a disproportionate amount of heat. Powerline would probably be a good solution here also to reduce the probability of your relatives having to reset anything bar the modem.

Very true, my WRT54GL running DD-WRT hasn't crashed before I don't think, but my previous Linksys router used to crash at least twice a week.

Mine either. The only thing that ever crashed that I had from linksys was their ADSL > Ethernet output modem, but that only needed resetting whenever BT worked on the line.

Re: Wireless router in loft?
My router occasionally throws a wobbly where it won't connect to the RAS and needs a reset but its usually stable.
The dlink I before had used to overheat and lockup a lot.

Re: Wireless router in loft?
so the PC is in the loft as well?
In that case I guess loft access is easy and there is no problem getting to a router in case a reset is required?
