Question Non-cable 8mb VirginMedia - Speeds & High Ping

Hello all,

I joined VirginMedia a couple of weeks ago after leaving AOL.

When I was on AOL 1Mb I could get a ping of about 30ms on most UK gaming servers for CounterStrike, Team Fortress 2, etc.

Now I'm on Virgin non-cable 8Mb broadband I'm averaging 250ms almost all the time.

---------------------

Okay, I'll cut to the chase and post some details..

The highest speed I've had from a speedtest is-

and the lowest is-

I've ran numerous speedtests at different times of the day and now we are averaging between 500Kbps and 1000Kbps DL

Here is an example tracert from this afternoon-

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms www.routerlogin.com [192.168.0.1]
2 229 ms 219 ms 214 ms glfd-bam-1.inet.ntl.com [194.145.148.4]
3 242 ms 226 ms 222 ms glfd-t2core-a-ge-wan71.inet.ntl.com [62.254.207.
57]
4 232 ms 249 ms 241 ms gfd-bb-a-so-720-0.inet.ntl.com [62.253.185.25]
5 237 ms 240 ms 242 ms gfd-bb-b-ge-000-0.inet.ntl.com [213.105.172.6]
6 228 ms 233 ms 227 ms redb-ic-1-so-700-0.inet.ntl.com [62.253.185.78]

7 302 ms 238 ms 234 ms 212.58.238.189
8 236 ms 250 ms 245 ms 212.58.238.149
9 235 ms 243 ms 231 ms rdirwww-vip.thdo.bbc.co.uk [212.58.224.131]

This is what speedtester.bt.com reports this evening after a line test:

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 679 kbps

Previously answered questions to VirginMedia:

* Nothing else is using the phone point - No SKY TV, No alarms, etc.
* The router is going into the main phone point, no extensions. Different filters have been tried too.
* The router displays DownStream Connection Speed 8128 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 448 kbps.

* The PC is a wired connection to the router.
* Our line hasn't been capped. The bad speeds are outside of their cap times anyway.
* There are no P2P programs running or anything else that uses the connection.
Firewall is disabled and spyware/virus checks report nothing.
* I've plugged directly into the phone point test socket but to no avail.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do please?

My exchange looks fine and Virgin say I should easily receive 6Mb on this line, which I have done occasionally.
I'm about 500m from the exchange and my router gives the following information-
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8128 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 15 db 3.5 db
Noise Margin 13 db 25 db

I've phoned Virgin "Technical Support" 3 times now unsuccessfully.
I've used their Remote Assistance 3 times, also without any success.
I've ran out of hair to pull out.

Many thanks.

If anyone wants any more information or has any questions please ask, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Re: Non-cable 8mb VirginMedia - Speeds & High Ping

I have the same problem and I phoned retentions today and the chap informed me he could switch me over from the BT IP stream system to datastream or the other way round but he said this would give me a fixed 2meg speed which if far better then I currently get. This will take a week to happen but otherwise I would have walked as the very expensive Tech support could not sort it out. He also mentioned that the adsl max bans will be ungraded around the new year so I could go back to the adsl max service once its all up and running. If this does not fix the problem then I will be off to try another ISP.

BTW I have noticed if you disconnect and reconnect the router/modem you sometimes get a good connection and currently my ping times are around 35ms which is much better but this will be short lived.

Re: Non-cable 8mb VirginMedia - Speeds & High Ping

Thanks for the reply Dave,
I might have to go onto fixed 2mb too as this is completely bonkers now.

Edit:

Utterly farcical.

If this was a one-off then maybe it's fair enough, but to have this for the past 3 days is absolutely ridiculous.

I give up. Time to just turn off the PC.

Re: Non-cable 8mb VirginMedia - Speeds & High Ping

Wow, Virgin have surpassed themselves tonight.

This evening started off quite promising too.

(Well I had 3 Mb for about 10 minutes)

Not responded to a single e-mail I've sent them in the past 3 days.
Tried Remote Assistance almost all day, couldn't get through to an operator.

Virgin ftl.

I might dig out the old 28K modem at this rate.

Please, can somebody help?

What can I do about this? (if anything)

Thanks

Re: Non-cable 8mb VirginMedia - Speeds & High Ping

hi peeps, you are wasting your time complaining to Virgin. I have been complaining for about 9 months. Complained to all internet governing bodies and Trading standards, and of course Virgin. I have suffered from a high ping since i signed up. The so called techie helpers will blame you or your pc. If you drop down to 2 meg you stll pay for 8 meg. The only way to get your ping down which is not permanent, is to disconnect from your speedtouch home page, and reconnect until your ping is reasonable i.e 50-60 ms.
Hope this helps. I will be leaving in a few months when my contract is up, and avoid Virgin products alltogether. Use the program below or similar to check your ping. Conect and reconect until ping is low.

hope this helps
