Router recommendations after 20 mb upgrade

Hi
Finally the last to be upgraded (Bristol)..Can get up to 20 mb without router, but when using current router (netgear rp114), it's not up to scratch.

Interested in your speeds with router model

I had the same problem but with a Netgear WGT624 v2, after talking with Netgear they said the WAN port was only capable of 10mb. To replace it I got the D-Link DIR-655 and so far has been excellent, I am able to get 2.4Mbps even on wireless with a built in 54G wifi in a Toshiba lappy. It is n-rated and has a gigabit switch so its well future proofed, and the web interface boasts many features and has great support built into it as well. Its a bit pricey tho at around Ã‚Â£100 but I think its the dogs nuts'.

Was comparing gig cable routers myself this afternoon, mainly the D-Link DIR-655 and Netgear WNR854T. Ã‚Â£100 would be fine for such good speeds, back in the day the rp114 would of been about Ã‚Â£70! I use grabit for usenet stuff and can only get about 600 kb/s at present. Wireless would be handy for my ps3 and laptop also.

I was looking at getting the Netgear one aswell but the web interface and tools have not improved and are the same as models that are 3-4 years old. The D-Link comes with a 11 year warrenty and the tech support is far superior to Netgear as well. Im running 3 machines wirelessly and a 360 and another machine on the gigabit. Take a look at http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/ for a comparison of the two routers, the D-Link comes out on top in most tests.

If you have any more questions regarding the DIR655 just ask.

Only negative is that it gets quite hot but this does not affect the routers performance, which Toilet-Duck alludes to.

Thanks guys, swayed by the good reviews and bought one today from a pc world near my home. A few quid dearer than some etailers, but couldnt be bothered to wait for delivery. Very impressed with it so far. Literally plugged it in without configuration and the wired ports worked straight off. Locked everything down pretty soon after though, he he. Getting up to 1800 kb/s from grabit now and 2400 earlier in the day. So easily doubled my rate and then some.

Currently resting on an old hard drive to keep cool.

One last thing, my firmware is 1.2, noticed on the dlink website they have a 1.3...
is it worth it do you think, and are you running that fw ?

Not true.

I have a WGT624v2 myself and it does 20mbps no problem.... if you DISABLE the SPI Firewall.
I have a thread on here somewhere explaining it all.

I have got a Belkin F5D5231-4 Ver.4000uk and that hits 20mb with no probs here in Birmingham, I was told by tech support it has a 63mb WAN port

Also, does anyone have experience of a wireless n card/usb adapter ? ...as my 2yr old Dell Inspiron 6000 (intel 2200 pro set b/g - 11g) is pretty good. Just thought i'd see how this goes first instead of getting one. Is it worth it ?

Also upgraded to 1.5 fw..seems to have more options.

CountZer0: Yes I did disable SPI when I had it and the speeds did improve but I could not max out the connection on newsgroups and the VM gamesfiles site. I contacted Netgear and they confirmed the WGT624 v2 is not a 20mb rated router, plus it is not safe running a router with an open firewall even if you have software firewalls - hardware firewalls are alot stronger. Mine was on its way out anyway.

Limeroad: If your after a new wifi adapter get a D-Link PCMCIA card that matches the router - will be able to get 300mbps over wireless.

I was using fw 1.3 with no problems then saw your post. I got 1.3 from the UK site and was unsure whether the router would like US fw but I have flashed the router with this fw and everything seems to be ok thus far. Havn't noticed anything different in the interface - have you spotted any new features?
