Camera

people,

My brother is gong away to australia for a year, and he is looking for a cheapish digi camera.

he does not want to spend over £100 including memory.

so what about this camera
with this memory ?

have I picked a good camera?

I need your help with this as he has left it late, and I am not the best on photography jargon

Re: Camera

If there is just one thing which will reflect on the price it is the fact it is AA batteries and not rechargeable.
I know the main advantage with AA batteries is you can buy them anywhere, however I have found that they don't last much time in digital camera's and although you'd have to pay a bit more, a rechargeable battery can last longer. IMO.

Re: Camera

buy either the eneloop sanyo rechargable no drain or the uniross hybrio. Both of these have now been tested by me in AA form and they do not drain over time and work out the pack. A couple of sets of these and a charger suitable for whatever socket and your away

Re: Camera

It does specify NiMH as an acceptable battery type - most digitals push Akalines far too hard.

Big advantage of cameras running on NiMH AA, you can buy a lot of reserve power for a sensible price, though the need to accomodate 2 or in some cameras, 4 AA cells rather dictates the size and shape, If you can mantain a reasonable charging regime with a smart charger that can top-up from any condition, no need to use more expensive pre-charged cells.

If it can run acceptably on alkalines, that is a bonus, as any place with a store should have some in an emergency.

Re: Camera

to be honest guys, it aint going to be me that buys the batteries, he just wants a camera that can take good pics of the places he is going to.

he liked the price of the camera I linked to, and I sugested he got a 2Gb card to store more photos cause he may not be able to upload them for a while.

he would like rechargeable batteries, but for his price budget I think he may not get them.

ik
EDIT: sorry batteries confuse me, if he buys AA nimh batteries, he can charge them in the camera?

It doesn't look like it can charge the batteries in situ:

http://tinyurl.com/39b3az & http://tinyurl.com/3dhmwv

I bought this solar powered battery charger from Maplin for when I'm out and about: http://tinyurl.com/2o8pfc It charges four batteries at once, AA & AAA take about seven hours.

Re: Camera

NiMH AA's are not charged in the camera, only camaras with special packs tend to charge in place, due to the risk of accidental charging of non-rechargables otherwise.

7dayshop, or even Amazon, are well worth a look through for charger/battery sets - using anything else with a digital is false economy. Alkalines are pushed so hard, that they will require frequent resting, long before they are fully drained. In fact, it's sometimes best to avoid the very highest capacity NiMH, as their maximum power delivery may be inferior to those of less extreme capacity.
