I've Fixed my 20mb Slow Speed Problem!!

Hope this works for some of you...

Check to see if you require a modem exchange;

http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html...t_service.html

Follow the attached guide step by step;

http://www.virginmedia.com/help/20mb...timisation.php

Run this speed test;

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/testyou...?1186653317531

Now all of the above made only a 1-2mb gain to my average speed of 4-6mb.

UNTIL I CHANGED THE FOLLOWING!!

Contradicting one step on of the above guide boosted my speed to 19mb. My network adapter, (Nvidia N-Force) was originally set at, "Full Autonegotiation". The guide recommends, "100mbps/Full Duplex" which made no change for me. Instead I set mine to, "Autonegotiate for 100 Full Duplex" and INSTANTLY boosted me to 19mb. If I change this value back and forth my speed drops/rises accordingly as shown on the above speed test.

Hope this helps some of you. Please let me know how you get on and that Virgin engineer who is on his way to sort this out is gonna be ****ed LOL!!

I doubt that many people will have had a chance to view your post and try your suggestion. Maybe your new found bursts of speed have made you a little hasty

If it does work, you'll have made a lot of people happy, I can't test it, but would do if I could

Re: I've Fixed my 20mb Slow Speed Problem!!

Sorry to here that but I would try the other duplex settings and keep speed testing after each to see if you get any improvement.

Here's a before and after when I change this setting;

Fri, 10 Aug 2007 09:46:30 GMT

1st 512K took 1000 ms = 512 KB/sec, approx 4219 Kbps, 4.12 Mbps
2nd 512K took 1016 ms = 503.9 KB/sec, approx 4152 Kbps, 4.05 Mbps
3rd 512K took 890 ms = 575.3 KB/sec, approx 4740 Kbps, 4.63 Mbps
4th 512K took 578 ms = 885.8 KB/sec, approx 7299 Kbps, 7.13 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 5103 Kbps, 4.98 Mbps

And now;

Fri, 10 Aug 2007 09:47:11 GMT

1st 512K took 219 ms = 2337.9 KB/sec, approx 19264 Kbps, 18.81 Mbps
2nd 512K took 219 ms = 2337.9 KB/sec, approx 19264 Kbps, 18.81 Mbps
3rd 512K took 219 ms = 2337.9 KB/sec, approx 19264 Kbps, 18.81 Mbps
4th 512K took 203 ms = 2522.2 KB/sec, approx 20783 Kbps, 20.3 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 19644 Kbps, 19.18 Mbps

Also speedtest.net shows;

Re: I've Fixed my 20mb Slow Speed Problem!!

I'm guessing this is dependant on your NIC, mine doesn't have an Autonegotiate for 100 Full Duplex option (see attachment). I assume setting mine to 1000MB Full Duplex won't have a detrimental effect.

I seem to be consistently getting 10 Mb from speedtest.net and the speedtest here. Downloading from gamedemos.virginmedia.com gives around 16 Mb, downloading from Fileshack's New York server (capped at 5Mb) gives me the full 5, but some sites seem much more flaky, I suspect the routing is to blame.

Were you getting these speeds prior to the optimizations or since you made the changes?

dont relie on speed tests so unrealiable tbh best thing would be a 50mb file from a good server for better results

Re: I've Fixed my 20mb Slow Speed Problem!!

Agreed! Downloading a game demo from the Microsoft site is a good test. I was getting 400-500kbs but now 1900-2000!!!

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

The two speed tests are probably not a true indication of day to day usage but when I make the duplex change both tests reflect the change and show the jump from 4-6mb to 17-20mb straight away. Plus they are simpler for our not so advanced users.

I made the optimisations as soon as I was upgraded, I don't know what it's like with a different setting.

Downloading FSX from Microsoft seems to very between 10 - 15 Mb

Re: I've Fixed my 20mb Slow Speed Problem!!

Just read through the posts and like chickendippers I to had a realtek nic and for the past few months have when things settled down about 10mg connection no matter what I tried to alter.
Just upgraded mobo and chip and after reading this post checked to see what setting this new mobo/lan is set to and it is on auto as detailed above...........

And look whats happened......

Re: I've Fixed my 20mb Slow Speed Problem!!

I never get more than 10mb from any speed test I run, but, downloading from the microsoft site using Orbit downloader and I'm peaked at 2.38mb per second.

798.28mb downloaded in 5:50

I can't change my port speed for my router, it doesn't appear to have any options for wan port speed (Netgear Rangemax router)
