wireless speed issues on with mac

Hi,

Had my macbook pro now for nearly 2 months and i've never really felt that i'm getting the true speeds I'm paying for (4mb ntl/virgin media).

This is my setup:

old ntl cable modem (silver) connected via ethernet to D-link 614+ router with latest firware installed. Off of the reuter i've running a xp notebook and my macbook pro (both wireless). As for security on the router I have setup WEP 128bit.

When "surfing" on the mbp it seems slower and sometimes dailup speed slow but when using the xp machine it seems to be ok. I know it's not the actual virgin connection as when both machines are connected (ethernet) speeds are fine. Is there a certain setup needed when running a mac and a d-link router. At the moment i have manually asigned an ip to my mac and entered all the required fields dns server numbers etc... My signal strength is 100% on both machines so that should rule out interferance of any kind. Just ran speed test fom this site and the results are:

Sun, 24 Jun 2007 16:56:19 GMT

1st 512K took 34121 ms = 15 KB/sec, approx 124 Kbps, 0.12 Mbps
2nd 512K took 6169 ms = 83 KB/sec, approx 684 Kbps, 0.67 Mbps
3rd 512K took 23898 ms = 21.4 KB/sec, approx 176 Kbps, 0.17 Mbps
4th 512K took 5042 ms = 101.5 KB/sec, approx 836 Kbps, 0.82 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 455 Kbps, 0.45 Mbps

so what speed should that be?

any help anyone?

cheers

Re: wireless speed issues on with mac

What is the speed you get when you use the wired connection between the Mac and the router?

As for security, I'd ditch WEP (it can be cracked in less than a minute by experienced hackors). I would go for WPA, or, if all your equipment supports it, WPA2.

Re: wireless speed issues on with mac

Hi,

i seem to have a problem when setting up WPA with my mac it just does not to connect??? Heres my wired test results:

Sun, 24 Jun 2007 19:23:44 GMT

1st 512K took 1327 ms = 385.8 KB/sec, approx 3179 Kbps, 3.1 Mbps
2nd 512K took 2252 ms = 227.4 KB/sec, approx 1874 Kbps, 1.83 Mbps
3rd 512K took 2072 ms = 247.1 KB/sec, approx 2036 Kbps, 1.99 Mbps
4th 512K took 2135 ms = 239.8 KB/sec, approx 1976 Kbps, 1.93 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 2266 Kbps, 2.21 Mbps

ran the test 3 times and this was the highest result.... I'm paying for 4mb so thats not right is it???

EDIT:

just tested it another way buy downloading over usenet. I was getting between 500-600 on a wired connection but only 20 max on a wireless connection??? so I gota router problem big time.

Re: wireless speed issues on with mac

Well I have the net working now but still wireless probs. Only using WEP still as I just cant get either computer to coonect using WPA (router doesnt support WPA2). Wired both computers run at right spped (4mb) but wirelessly they only run at half speed (approx). And no before anybody says anything both XP notebook and mac are never used at the same time so no chance of 1 comp using up connection from another.

cheers
