speed issues

1)What, specifically, is your issue?

My download package is 4Mb and i only get 300KB/s maximum. This has happened for quite a while now it seems as though my upgrade from 2Mb to 4Mb was not properly successful since 256KB/s is 2Mb. * I know for a fact im paying for 4Mb*

2) Do you have cable TV? If so, is there any reception degradation?

No

3) Have you contacted customer support about this problem? If so, what did they say?

Try removing your router and trying there - same issue. Try to boot into safe mode with networking - same issue. Turning off firewall and anti-virus - same issue.

4) What troubleshooting steps have you taken to resolve this problem? (aka: if you haven't tried to help yourself, why should *we* help you?)

Rebooting the modem leaving it off for 5-10 second then putting it back in. Not using the router. And trying both LAN ports available on my motherboard

5 Who you are and what you have
a) Where in the country are you?
Nottingham, East Midlands
b) What is your operating system?
Windows XP Professional
c) What is your home network setup?
Buffalo Router with AOSS encryption. Running with 1 Wired, 2 Wireless one being a PC and the other my Wii.
d) If you have more than one computer (off most of the time), is the problem occuring on all other machines?
Yes
e) Are you running a firewall of any sort? Have you ever installed one? Did you try to turn it off during troubleshooting?
Virgin Media asked me to do so - same problem.
f) Please supply a traceroute from you to www.bbc.co.uk in text format

Re: speed issues

Try adjusting your Max Transfer Unit value (MTU)

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;283165

Do it on your PC first without the router and see what you get... remember to reboot.

Re: speed issues

Onestop showed me as 3.15Mbps download and 354 kbps upload.

Two seconds later I got:

Tue, 29 May 2007 00:11:27 UTC

1st 512K took 471 ms = 1087 KB/sec, approx 8957 Kbps, 8.75 Mbps
2nd 512K took 430 ms = 1190.7 KB/sec, approx 9811 Kbps, 9.58 Mbps
3rd 512K took 451 ms = 1135.3 KB/sec, approx 9355 Kbps, 9.14 Mbps
4th 512K took 410 ms = 1248.8 KB/sec, approx 10290 Kbps, 10.05 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 9603 Kbps, 9.38 Mbps

From the Speed Test up there^^^^

I know which one I'd tend to believe...

Re: speed issues

Is the speed poor all the time or is it worse at certain times during the day?
Have you checked your modem's own pages for downstream received power and SNR?

Could you please do this:

ping -n 100 www.bbc.co.uk

Supply just the last few lines showing Ping Statistics etc please.

Don't bother messing with MTU, your pings are high and there was some loss there which won't be due to MTU.

Ta.

Your levels are within tollerance. Can you post the data rate bit on the config page?
