Re: who used to own NTL (virgin media)
No one used to own NTL:
NTL: merged with Telewest to form NTL: Telewest
The there was a merger between Virgin Mobile, Virgin.net and NTL: Telewest.
Then the new company renamed Virgin Media.
However the business side stayed as NTL:Telewest Business, but this is part of the the Virgin group

Re: who used to own NTL (virgin media)
In my area the chain was like this:
Telecential -> Comtel -> Cabletel -> ntl - > ntl:telewest -> Virgin Media
Telecential's ground breaking offer at the time was to offer local cable-cable calls free after 6pm. My how the times have changed!

ntl had two main regions..."Langley" ("original ntl") & "Bromley" (ex-C&W areas, acquired by ntl buying up C&W's cable assets).
The "original ntl" region was itself made from other cable companies being swallowed up by CableTel/NTL (e.g. in my area Anglia Cable & Cambridge Cable became ntl).
