DHCP Error

Hi

I've been trying to sort out a mates internet connection, as yet with no luck.

MSN connects and remote assistant works, can log into my pc remotely and receive emails.

Cannot browse web pages or send emails.

He uses BT Yahoo and voyager v2500 router, can't sign in to BT Yahoo. Broadband talk has also stopped working.

I notice in the event viewer that therre are a number of DHCP errors, saying cannot be assigned an ip address.

On checking the pc has a LAN ip address and I can ping the external ip address.

I spent ages yesterday trying to sort out. BT say there is no problem there end and that it's the pc, but was working fine the night before!

I have run spybot and came back clean, turned off ZA incase this was the problem, made no difference.

So I'm led back to the DHCP error, but cannot reslove it, any help would be appreciated.

Re: DHCP Error

The DHCP error is prob a red herring, esp if you can get onto MSN, etc. I would think it's either a proxy, DNS or firewall issue.
What is the exact error from www.bbc.co.uk or from Outlook Exp?
Try starting a DOS (command) prompt ('Start', 'Run', "cmd") and then typing -
nslookup www.bbc.co.uk

telnet www.bbc.co.uk 80

Let us know what these commands return.
Also, to test the firewall, better to uninstall ZA than turn off and check that Windows firewall is not enabled.

Re: DHCP Error

Thanks, I will check those out later when I pop round my mates.

Windows firewall was disabled too, I'll also try uninstalling ZA. Seems strange though been working fine for weeks with ZA on it.

Will post my findings later.

Re: DHCP Error

Right I ran those commands and here's what I got.

nslookup www.bbc.co.uk

Non-authortative answer:
Name: www.bbc.co.uk
Address: 212.58.226.232
Aliases: www.bbc.co.uk

telnet www.bbc.co.uk

Connecting to www.bbc.co.uk...Could not open connection to the host, on port 23: Connect failed.

Tried unistalling firewall and run adware

Still no joy, some pages did load, but very slowly and then failed.

MSN now keeps signing in and out every couple of minutes.

DHCP seems to have stopped, but still no internet.

Checked the router settings and keep getting ATM 5 Ping failed.

Also the broadband talk has stopped working, surely not a pc related issue?

My mate rang BT and they said no problem their end, must his pc. I've tried for ages to sort it out and now it's starting to annoy me.

Usually been able to sort out most network/internet issues pretty quickly, but not this one!

Re: DHCP Error

Well, tried a laptop that works fine on BT at another address, same problem could not connect, or intermittently very slowly.

So BT were called again, gave the same old cr*p about it being pc, firewall etc...

Finally got it through to them, said they would run a full line test, but would take at least a day!! Seemed weird to me, but my mates going to call back today.

Personally, I think the routers knackered, but We'll wait and see I guess.

Re: DHCP Error

If the router's reporting ATM errors then it sounds like there are problems between the ADSL modem (in the router) and the exchange. (not an expert on ADSL technology, btw ) Hopefully BT will be able to diagnose.
