Netgear RP614v4 and NTL (Virgin) No Connection

I recently purchased a Netgear RP614v4 broadband cable router after having many problems with a Belkin one and deciding to change. It arrived today and I began the setup process following the instructions to the letter. The setup process completed and all seemed ok but the router can not connect to the internet. Apparently something to do with it being unable to acquire an IP address. I have read elsewhere that the problem could be to do with MAC addresses... what does this mean? And any other advice would be great, as I'm pulling my hair out here

Cheers.

Did you power off everything when switching routers? It would probably work if you clone the old MAC of the old router on to this one but if you want to try the following first:
Power everything off (shut down PC)
Make sure all leads are connected properly
Power up the modem/ STB
Wait for lights to settle/ Lock
Power up Router
Wait for lights to settle/ lock
Power up PC

Yes everything was off and disconnected when I began setup...

Have tried the series of steps that you suggested above and still no joy.

In the menu of the router there is an option to enter a specific MAC address for the router to use... found the old routers MAC add on the underside of the case, put it into the box in the new routers menu... updated, reset etc.. still nothing?

If you remove the router and connect the PC to the modem do you get a connection?

Yep, works fine (after resetting the modem).

Then cloning the MAC of your ethernet card/ port into the router might be a better way.
Try:
Start menu
Run
type: cmd
press enter
type: ipconfig /all
press enter
You should see a "physical address" for your LAN connection which is the MAC address assigned to your PC ethernet connection.
Try entering that into the router and then reset the router and modem after applying the setting. (power modem up first and then the router)

Don't know what happened, but didn't need to do that in the end... left it for a while as I was getting mightily fed up with it. Decided to have another bash at it, switched it all on and hey presto the amber connection light turned green Thanks for all the help mate

Sometimes you just have to power off for a few mins before it will notice and look for a new MAC. At least it works now.
