Firewire drivers for windows ?

Anyone know where I can get updated windows firewire drivers (1394 net specifically).

The ones bundled with windows xp are from 2001 and dont support true tcp/ip.

I see that windows has excluded this from vista too

Nope - these are generic windows drivers not hardware drivers

Think you may have given me an idea to install a spare secondary firewire card and try installing the manufactors drivers but I get the nasty feeling that why would not have writted any 1394 net drivers and hence microsofts generic net driver takes over

Sacking this idea altogether windows fails me yet again.

I'll connect the two directly with a couple of gigabit cards and cable.

Get a mac - you might be able to use that.

Yeh BR I tried all that.. found one driver that saw my linux net adapter and wanted a driver for it it

Anyway Gigabit cards are like 7/8 quid on ebuyer just got to find one that linux supports well and allows jumbo packets the same being true on the windows side.

If you dont mind me asking - what the heck are you doing?

I assume its something that requires small network overheads.

I believe following these steps will allow you to set up a direct cable connection using normally a null modem cable but iirc you can use other methods ie firewire

Huh ? No mate I have always fancied firewire as a real network transport (400mbps) and it works great between linux machines (I've never tried bonding or bridging ports for more bandwidth but I thing 1394b/a is restricted to 400 and 800 mbps anyway.

I use 2 machines simultaneously Linux and Windows

Desktop is mounted on the Linux machine

Both are connected to the LAN and are controlled via a single keyboard mouse via x2vnc / vnc such that the effect is as I move my mouse onto the second monitor I am using the windows machines dragging it back I'm on linux. Both machines see the same desktop.

What I want is a dedicated network channel for just the vnc bit / shared desktop such that I get ABSOLUTE fluidity when using x2vnc as sometimes the mouse cursor slows down during heavy network load. I guess I could do QoS but prefer not to. A dedicated link would be much nicer.

I guess it doesn't have to be gigabit either so I'll just pop some old 10/100s in there but they might perform rubbish in crossover mode (thats a question can I get 100mbs under cross over ? : edit yeh I think cat5e will do the trick)

Crossover cable between the two would be the best IMO and the simplest.

Why you need jumbo packets though is beyond me for this application.

If you loose one packet or a packet is delayed thats a lot of info in one packet lost, if anything lots of small packets may be better seeing as bandwidth aint a problem.

Yeh well when I started thinking gigabit thats when I starting thinking jumbo frames as potentially like all hardware anything bought new can be re-applied somewhere else or in a different machine at a later date.

Besides thinking about it more you probably dont want gigabit speeds between the two due to high cpu utilization if you've not configured your frames correctly.

Also remember that if I move a file on my windows machine from say c: to the desktop I am in fact moving the file over the network - So if I were to do that often and with large size files then gigabit would definitely be required.

ethernet cards over firewire... how does that work... probably me sound thick but i interpret that as u trying to plug a firewire cable into a network card lol...

me...

i hav a laptop xp-mce and a desktop pc xp-pro.. when i wanna transfer big files wuickly.. i just use a firewire cable 4pin end plugged into my laptop... 6 pin end plugged into my pc... then to transfer the files i just find the ip of the other machine do \\ipaddress then its transfer just like if i was on a normal network...

is that basically wot u wanna be doing but with windows to linux?

one other thing... with vista dropping support for this type of networking... is there any third party driver i can install.. i've got a HP laptop with a Vista upgrade voucher i just pay P&P on and am tihnking og using it...
