I'm not sure about firewalls, but for AV you can get AVG or Avast. I've used both, and I prefer Avast. Both are free though and updated regularly.

Ditto, tried both but prefer Avast.

Re: need a virus scan to replace mcafee 2007

Eset NOD32 - i will say this only once - its the best god damn virus scanner money can buy.

It can scan my PC without me even knowing its doing it - (i have an AMD 2500+) - it has achieved 40 Virus Bulletin VB 100% awards, more than any other vendor and did i mention that its memory footprint (i.e. the amount of resources it hogs - is tiny).

Another vote for Avast AV.
As for firewall - do you have a router to share your connection? If so it will have a built-in firewall.
The Windows XP SP2 firewall is OK, but I would avoid the later versions of Zone Alarm.

People recommending Avast really should do some homework...

Yes i have a router i have the netgear WGT624 see here http://www.netgear.co.uk/extra/h_wir...ter_wgt624.php so it would be ok not to install a firewall and just use the netgear router's firewall only?,

Fair enough - for a free scanner its not bad don't get me wrong, but its not the best one.

Agree with you there, and if I were paying for an AV, I would NOT buy Norton or McAffee urgh.

After Xmas I might look into the one you recommend.

OK - not quite as good as NOD32, but free!

It's not slowed my PC down. About the only time I've noticed a slow down is when I'm gaming and it updates. My ping increases for a short time, but other than that no problems.

If you want to buy one, then look into TheBlueRajas suggestion.

If you have that router, which does have a firewall, I would personally enable XP SP2 firewall as a second line of defence (in fact that's what I have done!).

That's what I do. I've got a Linksys BEFSR41 with and I enable the XP SP2 firewall. Works fine.
