Re: wired connection

It's a Cat 5 straight through or patch cable, not a crossover...

Why don't you want to go wireless?

Re: wired connection

Most decent computer shops will be able to provide you with a standard straight through ethernet lead. Probably going to come premade in a 20m length.

If you have the ability to place a wire, then that can be cheaper than getting wireless routers and stuff. Also can be a more robust network, fewer risks of interference and the like. However the advantage of a laptop, in it's portability is a little stifled by attaching it to ethernet rather than wireless.

Re: wired connection

That would be a 15 meter patch cable so would do the job for you.

Re: wired connection

cat 5 is the wiring standard of the cable.

Patch cable is the type of lead, i.e. it has a RJ45 plug on each end.

For your purposes they are the same thing.

Re: wired connection

if you buy a laptop that has wireless built in ( a lot do nowadays) then a wireless router only needs to be a few quid more than a wired one.I would hold back on the decisions of what to buy until you know what the laptop has installed

Re: wired connection

Jane, the shop in the link below is very good for these type of cables and often cheaper.
