Disconnects/Belkin Wireless Routers
About a year ago we upgraded from a wired net in the house toa wireless using a Belkin router. During that time we have been plagued with disconnects.
As My son works from hope this was a serious problem for him.
I returned home after 3 months away to find him pulling his hair out over the problem. We made a search of the web and found several forum sites not only on the problem but specific to Belkin.
A trip to PCworld led us to purchasing a linksys unit and since fitting it we have had over a week without problem.
Anyone else had Belkin problem?
P.S. The guy at PCworld told us that NTL specified Linksys. I was under the impression that there was some sort of global agreement on the minimum built of units as with dvd's pccards etc. Is it true NTL spec types?

Re: Disconnects/Belkin Wireless Routers
I Have had a similar problem with my connection, A Belkin 4-port wired router, a Wireless access point that connects to the router, and a Wirless PC card in my laptop,
It sometime drops the connection but turning off and then on the router (WAP) solves the problem and reconnects?

Re: Disconnects/Belkin Wireless Routers
I don't think ntl specifically say you must use a certain brand of router. Indeed as they don't support networking, I can't see why they would have any list of "approved" routers.
The only router / wireless setup ntl directly promote is by actiontec, linked from the ntlworld.com pages.
Ultimately networking components should meet a standard, but because of the way cable works ntl's setup might be a little bit like microsoft's interpretation of html - slightly odd in places. Indeed I had a d-link router 604V whcih d-link eventually agreed was incomatibel with ntl's PACE STBs. Maybe there is something similarly odd with the Belkin setup.
Oh and I wouldn't take anything said to you at PC world as being the truth. Some staff are very good, others just say whatever line comes into their head.

Re: Disconnects/Belkin Wireless Routers
You see what happens when you mention PCworld! I will be honest now guv, My son and me went into fits of laughter and the word "PLONKER" entered the next sentence as we wandered in the direction of new laptops! ( sorry, but when i want something i want it NOW!) Thanks Rob, I can remember the HNC question, "what is ISDN" . Nearly bought a dlink after reading online report but my son slapped me around a bit (hate it when they grow up, and leave you behind after you taught them MSdos) and we got the Linksys and still do not understand the NTL recomendation (6 pints Lager but be fair, i am on holiday!)
Dave: I cannot believe there are no threads on this subject of Belkin, ta for the reply and we did the power down/up malarky. I still think that either a fan or a bag of ice cubes would do the trick but we all like a nice colour box with flashing lights! WHAT is 10mbps going to do with it, Looking at the new space shuttle tech site on cryogenics!

You saddo,

What are you on about? I was merely stating a dismay at someone making a rather over-generalised, and untrue, comment.
The PCW staff may not be the most knowledgeable but some of them do know a lot and you have to remember the targeted market. Plus it is a shop, I think there are retailers with far worse staff than PCW...

sometimes it'd work and sometime's I'd be in the same room as the belkin and still have no signal - pile of ****e.

Re: Disconnects/Belkin Wireless Routers
For anyone thinking of buying a Belkin, check out:
www.homenethelp.com/web/ review/belkin-wireless-router.asp
Chill out NFFC, I bought the laptop after some great assistance from the PCworld guy but I still agree with Robs comment.
P.S. You dont happen to work for them?

No it's not. I've never encountered it, and they will monitor their salespersons.
It's not true either.
