Angry PC won't acquire IP from router when wireless

Mother-in-law's Belkin wireless adsl modem/router is really starting to cheese me off. It has always been temperamental but now it's being downright bl00dy minded. I am browsing fine by wire, but it will not assign an IP address to the wireless card. Network Connections confirms that the PC is connected wirelessly (encryption correctly set up, password accepted and all that) but connectivity is limited as it was unable to get an IP.

I have re booted the router and the PC, and I have altered the LAN settings to force it to renew IP leases, all to no avail.

The wireless NIC is built in to this Advent laptop of hers and uses Intel Proset for Wireless software, which doesn't seem to atart up properly I don't suppose that helps.

Anyone got any ideas?

Have you tried to "repair" the connection?

Yep - Windoze's attempt at 'repairing' appears to involve shutting it down and then renewing the IP - which then doesn't happen. The repair process just goes on forever until I hit 'cancel' at which point it gets sniffy and says the repair failed because it was stopped by me.

Have you tried giving it a static IP?

Re: PC won't acquire IP from router when wireless

Have you set the wireless connection to be controlled by windoze?
If so, untick it so that the Intel software is used, otherwise try ticking it so windows controls it.
Try setting static IP config, see if you can ping the router.
Also check the advanced settings of XP's firewall as even though the main screen can say it is turned off, you have to go to the advanced settings and untick all the connections. I know it shouldn't affect DHCP but you never know with microsoft

Re: PC won't acquire IP from router when wireless

I had a similar problem with a belkin wireless router,it turned out to be the mac address filtering which i had enabled it was allowing the mac id of the nic but because the wirless card had a differnet mac address it was being blocked.
If you have enabled mac address filtering check the mac id of the wireless card is being allowed to access the network.

Re: PC won't acquire IP from router when wireless

What is make your wifi card?

*unistall the intel proset software

*ugrade the driver of your wifi card using the latest drivers

*click at the wireness connection (under networks), properties, wireless netwoks tab
*tick use windows to configure

The Proset software is complete rubbish and you do not need it. Now Windows will control the wifi.

Re: PC won't acquire IP from router when wireless

The wifi is a built-in intel proset one. I have upgraded the driver to the latest version and that made no difference. I have tried both intel and windows controlling the wireless and both fail at the same point - both say the PC is connected to the router, but neither can acquire an IP address from the router. It seems to me that the problem is in the router, not the PC.

I have tried to switch off DCHP on the router but when I change the setting and reboot, it's switched on again. NEARGH!!!

Re: PC won't acquire IP from router when wireless

What happens when you manually define an IP for the network, i.e. static?

Go to Start, Control Panel, Network Connections, Your Wireless Connection, Properties, TCP/IP, Properties, and manually set one.

Re: PC won't acquire IP from router when wireless

Try resetting the router/modem to factory defaults and start again, that is how I solved one problem before but it was not a Belkin router.
