Packet Loss... Again... How Boring.

Ok if you check my profile on here and digitalspy you'll find that I've had many problems with NTL, regarding packet loss and TV issues.

Not really a surprise but the packet loss has now returned within the last fortnight.

The first tracert to yahoo.com:
Tracing route to www.yahoo.akadns.net [68.142.226.37]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 13 ms 6 ms 5 ms 10.157.103.254
2 7 ms 5 ms 8 ms cdif-t2cam1-b-v112.inet.ntl.com [62.254.254.181]
3 8 ms 7 ms 7 ms cdif-t2core-b-ge-wan62.inet.ntl.com [62.254.253.
169]
4 9 ms 11 ms 43 ms bre-bb-b-so-300-0.inet.ntl.com [213.105.172.49]
5 27 ms 10 ms 13 ms bre-bb-a-ae0-0.inet.ntl.com [213.105.172.86]
6 19 ms 12 ms 11 ms redb-ic-1-so-010-0.inet.ntl.com [62.253.188.106]
7 852 ms 170 ms 85 ms 83.245.9.226
8 84 ms 83 ms 97 ms vlan241-msr1.re1.yahoo.com [216.115.96.171]
9 84 ms 86 ms 86 ms t-3-1.bas1.re2.yahoo.com [206.190.33.91]
10 85 ms 84 ms 85 ms p6.www.re2.yahoo.com [68.142.226.37]
Trace complete.

The second tracert to yahoo.com literally right after the first:
Tracing route to www.yahoo.akadns.net [68.142.226.50]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 7 ms 8 ms 7 ms 10.157.103.254
2 7 ms 7 ms 9 ms cdif-t2cam1-b-v112.inet.ntl.com [62.254.254.181]
3 8 ms 8 ms 7 ms cdif-t2core-b-ge-wan62.inet.ntl.com [62.254.253.
169]
4 10 ms 9 ms 10 ms bre-bb-b-so-300-0.inet.ntl.com [213.105.172.49]
5 11 ms 11 ms 11 ms bre-bb-a-ae0-0.inet.ntl.com [213.105.172.86]
6 18 ms 11 ms 11 ms redb-ic-1-so-010-0.inet.ntl.com [62.253.188.106]
7 85 ms 84 ms 83 ms 83.245.9.226
8 85 ms 87 ms 89 ms vlan261-msr2.re1.yahoo.com [216.115.96.175]
9 86 ms 85 ms 83 ms t-3-1.bas1.re2.yahoo.com [206.190.33.91]
10 86 ms 84 ms 85 ms p19.www.re2.yahoo.com [68.142.226.50]
Trace complete.

Notice the 7th hop, on the first I have bad pings, on the second they're average. Pinging the same server within a minute of eachother brings totally different results. This is what I find when gaming, I will have a good ping of between 10-40ms, then it shoots up to 900 and then drops back down again.

I keep my pc to a minimum, I virus scan regularly, I am perfectly sure that this is not pc related to spyware or any other software issues. My PC is clean.

Re: Packet Loss... Again... How Boring.

All those traces really show is that a router in the middle appears to treat ICMP as a low priority. Your actual pings to the far end are the same in both.

Re: Packet Loss... Again... How Boring.

Now take a look at these results, exactly the same tracert in every way, same servers but
in some places it's very irratic. Just what i'm getting while gaming etc.

I'm on teamspeak 2 communications at the moment, and only have that program open as an active
network using program. I have 2.61% packet loss according to the program.

Also forgot to mention that the modem is connected directly to the pc through an ethernet port.

Re: Packet Loss... Again... How Boring.

Yeah i've had this problem for months now.

Tried ringing NTL but ya know what there like? say packet loss and they say "Is your cable modem pluged into your computer" .

I've found from 9am till about 4-5 pm the trace routes are fine, No bad pings or anything but after that there is one certain trace that pings 200+ms.

I'm thinking its because NTL's network cannot handle the load of the upgraded speeds, I'm in Nottingham btw.

OoO think i might go over to another service unless NTL magicly fix it which is very unlikely.

ooo well.

Re: Packet Loss... Again... How Boring.

Hi,

That IP address at hop 7 does not belong to NTL, so I imagine it's not on the NTL network?

If you go to http://www.ripe.net/whois and put in the IP addresses, you will see the 1st 6 belong to NTL, but the 7th belongs to PacketExchange LTD, so I would guess that is the 1st one off the NTL network?

post some traceroutes so we can see what is happening

doubt it

It sounds like you are getting loss/ high pings on one hop, because the router in question gives low priority to icmp traffic.... if you post some trace routes, i am prepared to be proved wrong though...

Re: Packet Loss... Again... How Boring.

Perhaps you'd be better served posting traceroutes to the Teamspeak server in question rather than posting traces to Yahoo which could take a completely different route?

Re: Packet Loss... Again... How Boring.

It really never matters what I tracert. I only tracert to show how the pings vary.

This is the case when browsing, gaming or on teamspeak. So it's not specifically teamspeak.

At the moment everything is back to normal, no problems at all with my connection, perfect pings and no packet loss. Another day however it may go back to how it was previously.
The connection simply isn't consistent, when it works it works great, but in the minority of days packet loss is evident in all programs.

Re: Packet Loss... Again... How Boring.

Grrr @ 2 posters in completely different areas in same thread.

IanGuy I'm lost as to see where the variation is between

10 85 ms 86 ms 85 ms p11.www.re2.yahoo.com [68.142.226.42]

and

10 85 ms 86 ms 85 ms p14.www.re2.yahoo.com [68.142.226.45]

I'm not entirely sure what you expect us to do about a router that doesn't belong to us. If it's a Foundry that'll explain its' poor response to pings, Foundry's prioritise it very lowly. I also notice that regardless of how high it's pinging the hops behind it are unaffected.

Show me some proof of this small amount of packetloss, also if you're using wireless to connect haven't you thought that might be an issue?

GreenGoblin, you so don't want to be showing me a flawless traceroute apart from one high pinging hop, I've been through that so many times on this board and it gets a bit dull! If it's fine after the high pinging hop I really am not fussed.

Just for comparison though:

Code:
  2 7 ms 5 ms 6 ms sot3-t2cam1-a-ge95.inet.ntl.com [80.4.226.13]
  3 6 ms 5 ms 5 ms sot3-t2core-a-ge-wan61.inet.ntl.com [80.4.225.5]

  4 21 ms 8 ms 10 ms win-bb-a-so-020-0.inet.ntl.com [62.253.185.49]
  5 11 ms 11 ms 10 ms bre-bb-b-so-100-0.inet.ntl.com [213.105.172.234]

  6 10 ms 10 ms 10 ms bre-bb-a-ae0-0.inet.ntl.com [213.105.172.86]
  7 10 ms 15 ms 10 ms redb-ic-1-so-010-0.inet.ntl.com [62.253.188.106]

  8 82 ms 83 ms 82 ms 83.245.9.226
  9 82 ms 81 ms 84 ms vlan221-msr2.dcn.yahoo.com [216.115.96.167]
 10 88 ms 84 ms 82 ms ge7-2.bas2-m.dcn.yahoo.com [216.109.120.197]
 11 83 ms 82 ms 82 ms p15.www.dcn.yahoo.com [216.109.118.78]
Perhaps there was an issue with that router at one time, I can't get a high ping out of it now so all seems cool.
