Page loading issues

Hi,

I wonder if any of you could help me with a spot of troubleshooting. I've had members of our forum complaining of repeated "Page not loading" errors and have narrowed the problem down solely to members using NTL broadband.

Here's the board in question: http://badpoo.co.uk/forum/ (please be warned the site contains bad language in places)

Errors range from "this document contains no data" messages, to displaying random amounts of the page - regardless, it makes using the board very frustrating.

I wondered whether any other NTL users would experience these problems when viewing the page - I would be very grateful if anyone could have a quick look and mention whether they notice any problems.

My best guess at this point is that it could be a problem with MTU settings, or NTL having a low timeout or similar, although I'm really not sure about this.

Many thanks for any help in advance.

Looks like rainforestconcern.org is causing an error, think it's timing out.

Re: Page loading issues

Dump the contents of the IE Temporary Internet Folder cache (TIF)
Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Internet Options --> Delete Files

Dump the contents of the Mozilla FireFox Cache { if you use FireFox }
Tools --> Options --> Privacy --> Cache --> Clear

1) Download the TrendMicro Sysclean Front End

Download the utility SYSCLEAN_FE at the following URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/got-a-virus.htm
SYSCLEAN_FE automates the download and execution process of the Trend Sysclean Package.
Direct URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Sysclean_FE.exe

2) Download and install Ad-aware SE
(free personal version v1.05)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
Update Ad-aware with the latest definitions and then exit the software.

3) Execute; SYSCLEAN_FE.EXE
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; c:\sysclean\SYSCLEAN_FE.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'SYSCLEAN_FE Link' in c:\sysclean }
when you get to the menu dhoose [1] so you can boot into Safe Mode.

4) Disable System Restore
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDo...eSysRestore.htm

5) Reboot your PC into Safe Mode and shutdown as many applications as possible.

6) Execute; c:\sysclean\SYSCLEAN_FE.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'SYSCLEAN_FE Link' in c:\sysclean }
Choose [2] on the menu and let SYCLEAN.COM scan your computer.
when done, execute Ad-aware SE and perform a full scan of your PC and delete
all objects found.

7) Restart your PC and perform a "final" Full Scan of your platform
Execute; c:\sysclean\SYSCLEAN_FE.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'SYSCLEAN_FE Link' in c:\sysclean }
Choose [2] on the menu and let SYCLEAN.COM scan your computer.
when done, execute Ad-aware SE and perform a final scan of your PC and delete
all objects found.

8) Re-enable System Restore and re-apply any System Restore preferences,
(e.g. HD space to use suggested 400 ~ 600MB),

9) Reboot your PC.

10) Create a new Restore point

Erm it's not just one person seeing the problem so it's unlikely that it's the same issue on completely different pcs, (spread across a wide geographical area) causing the page load issues.

Ronniec, where is the site hosted?

Re: Page loading issues

Hmm, I hadn't thought of this line of thinking. The site is hosted by 34sp.com.

Here are some other sites hosted by them - are they affected too?

http://www.gigreviews.net/
http://www.coastalsurf.co.uk/
http://www.mysportsiteforum.co.uk/

Those all load fine here at Preston uni.

Re: Page loading issues

They aren't exactly loading instantly but they do load. Unlike your site though, they seem to be basic forum installs without many hacks and mods. Have you tried removing your hacks etc to see if load times return to normal? Also do you have any advertising on the site which may be trying to use pop ups etc?

Just loaded it in IE on server 2003 and it behaved very strangely, a couple of times it loaded fine but it gave a few "Page cannot be displayed" errors and on a couple of occassions it loaded, the page flashed blank a couple of times and then it settled back on the page and spontaneously reloaded Anyone been tinkering with the site coding that might have de-stabilised it since it's install?

Re: Page loading issues

The odd thing is that I have a member who was using the board on Telewest until last week, without any issues. He moved back home from uni onto the NTL connection, plugged in and straight away he gets the problem.

There's no advertising or popups (God forbid!)

I've done so much work customising the board it'd be impossible to remove everything. My best guess at the moment is that there's something in the script which maybe runs too long, and NTL doesn't like waiting. How on Earth I'm supposed to tell what, I don't know.

Re: Page loading issues

TBH, if there was a problem with the ntl BB timings, they would have been detected by some of the membership before and reported here.

It looks to me like it's probably an issue with your hosting or the Forum code itself.

Re: Page loading issues

Are all images hosted on the forum server or are some hosted 3rd party? It could be that some image files are taking their time loading, I'm still thinking it's forum code tinkering though Too much tweaking or adjusting can have detrimental affects (some which may ony be seen by people who have to go through slow proxies etc).

Re: Page loading issues

I went on the board padpoo.co.uk and yes some parts said no data on this document. Put in a manual proxy and all sites worked at normal speed.

Re: Page loading issues

Thank you - it was indeed a problem with the proxy. Changing it resolved the problem.

Cheers.
