Why does Microsoft think we're dumb/imbeciles.....
when it's actually been them all along?
Ok, two gripes this evening, just thought I'd share these little gems hopefully to stop somebody else making the same mistake that I did.....
My Laptop came with XP installed on a FAT32 partition, according to the Manufacturers this is to make life easier for customers as they don't have to worry about all the associated security gubbins that comes with NTFS.
That's ok, thinks I, I can just use Convert c: /FS:NTFS and that will convert my drive to NTFS. I did the responsible thing and backed up all of my data, files etc, to the Server and ploughed straight ahead.....
That's when things went to Hell in a handbag.
- The reason I wanted to do this was to enable group security settings, user groups, file permissions etc..... Shame that Microsoft don't trust users with XP Home installed to be able to handle this sort of technology. You see it turns out that this feature isn't available in XP Home (but I'm sure you already knew that anyway), I never thought to check - it never occured to me that they would have removed the feature for any reason.
- So, having discovered (to my absolute delight) that the whole excersize was pointless as I still couldn't do what I wanted to do I then get the next exciting revelation. For some reason, the conversion process has destroyed the programs list of my Firewall (ZA). None of the programs that were previously listed in the access list are in there anymore, the whole thing needs setting up again.
- So, now I'm getting alerts from ZA left right and center. It's then that I realise that the system has slowed to a snails pace and is all but non-responsive. I finally track down the cause, you'll like this, for some reason the conversion to NTFS has triggered my AV software and caused it to do a complete sweep of the entire partition.......Deep joy..... Cue much waiting and banging of head against desk.....
Like I said, just wanted to share
I'm off to blow up MS HQ in the states this weekend, anybody want to lend me the air fare

Bit late now but save your ZA settings - Overview... Preferences... Backup They are exported as an XML file. If memory serves, you can do some XP Pro stuff in XP Home, but you have to download add-on programs.
And it's "gone to hell in a handcart", but handbag made me smile

See?
Now that I've changed to NTFS my machine doesn't even know the difference between a handbag and a handcart

Judging by the contents of your average handbag, most women don't know the difference either

It's microsoft's fault you're using a cut-down version of the OS and didn't think to check what the difference was?

Those sound afwully like ZA problems to me.
I'm no MS-phile by any means, but people do tend to blame them for everything that goes wrong with their machines, when it often isn't the case.

Humans only blame themselves when they're not to blame, and blame others when they are.
