Can you still get the updates manually? Anyway I guess you should stump up.

I couldn't possibly comment on the grounds I'd incriminate myself.
Is there a reason you haven't tried any of the free options for example avg? Or are you happy with norton?
p.s. I tried avg and it let a virus in my system - so personally I'm sticking with norton, on the other hand norton does take up a lot of system rescources.

My impression too. Well, I have to cough up each year.
A supplementary question. I have Norton 2002 and I'm quite happy to leave it at that. As I get regular virus definition updates would there actually be any advantage in updating to a later version?

Technically no you can't update manually if your subscription has expired but on older versions on Norton you could so 'something with the time' and then manually update, newer version you can't though (really ) so be good and pay, it's not that mauch is it?

Re: Norton Anti virus subscription due
I had Norton 2002 at work and when the renewal came up this time round the price had jumped. Out of interest I checked on Amazon what the price would be for an upgrade package to the 2005 version. It was cheaper Needless to say we got the upgrade
It is possible that we had more than just anti-virus last time but since that was the only part we were using it wasn't worth the higher renewal.

Now what would happen if instead of paying for a further virus definition subscription you went out and bought another bargain bin copy of Norton AV which turned out to be the same edition as the one you had installed?

Re: Norton Anti virus subscription due
If I was going to go that route I might as well have restarted the clock and simply re-installed the existing version Given that I was thinking about being vaguely legal I decide the upgrade was probably worth it.
I was also working under the apparently false hope that Symantec would have got their act together and sorted the new version so that it ran better with XP user level accounts It has this nice "feature" - install software under the admin account (because you have to), tell it to do automatic live updates and then log off and use your "normal" working account with basic user privilege. Last time I tried this the automatic updates didn't work I have had to manually set the access on all the directories and registry keys it uses so that it works which rather defeats the point of using a user account instead of an admin account!

not sure that works, however trashing your drive and starting affresh could be an idea

Re: Norton Anti virus subscription due
Do people really pay for there software these days when its so easy to get hold of cracked copys ?
but for those who do you can go to (hope you can post links on here)
http://securityresponse.symantec.com.../download.html
and download the updates manualy.

Yes, from 2004 onwards you get some spyware and adware removal tools, so you might want to consider upgrading....it's about the same price as renewing for a year anyway.

I think that should work, as you have bought another annual subsucription. I've certainly bought a full Norton product (although it was the next years') to upgrade an existing one without any problems.

Re: Norton Anti virus subscription due
Id advise an update from 2002 to the latest verion, actually, with the bloatware that it has become I would sugest using avg www.grisoft.com and its free....
I use the corporate edition, I hate the latest versions of security suite etc..
its worth rembering that althoguh these updates just magically appear. there is a team of people who spend there time creating those updates. they have famillies mortgages etc.. so £21 is a small price to pay IMO
