Flashing NEC3500 firmware with new!
Hi i would like to flash my firmware to remove the rip lock as its painfully slow at 2x. I've downloaded the dangerous brothers firmware for my NEC3500. My drive has 2.16 firmware. So i downloaded the matching firmware zip. I'd like to upgrade to rpc1 and riplock removal. On opening the zip file there are four files and an exe file. The syntax says to type a particular command under dos( i understand how to do this) but what is the exe for. The syntax for flashing refers to the bin files in the zip, not the exe. Do i have to run the exe first.? If so how do i do this.?
thanks.

Never heard it called 'real DOS mode' but I suspect they mean hit F8 while restarting XP and one of the options is 'Safe mode with Command prompt'.

Re: Flashing NEC3500 firmware with new!
If you can't get Aragorn's suggestion to work try this.
First, print out a copy of the instructions.
Then format a floppy disk but ensure the 'copy system files' box is ticked first. Then copy all the files contained in the zip onto it.
Leave the floppy in and reboot your system. If your BIOS is set to boot from floppy then it will, and you'll just see a DOS screen.
Then follow the instructions you printed out earlier.
Then remove the floppy and press ctrl-alt-del to reboot again.

You can create a DOS boot CD and copy the flash files/roms to it, making sure you've set your system to boot from CD initially. Unfortunately as my ISP is only letting me view about 1% of site's at the moment I can't find a decent guide but try searching on google for "create dos boot cd"
Edit: try this

Yes, that's what Altis was refering to.
In retrospect, his answer probably more likely to be correct than mine. I hope you have a flippy drive!

http://club.cdfreaks.com - one of the best places to go for unofficial drive flashing info.
http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php - this is probably the other

Re: Flashing NEC3500 firmware with new!
Firmware page forums are invaluable, got my drive flashed from NEC ND1000A>ND1100A (2.4x>4x dvd write speed).
As for booting into real dos, i use my old windows 98 disc for that, works a charm; never put a disk drive into my computer.

If you're using Windows XP on NTFS you'll have a problem, you won't be able to read the NTFS drives .. so where do you put the Flash tool and the .BIN file?

Some words about upflashing:
ND1000 to ND1100 seems to be working

Does he mean you just flash your pick of 1100A firmware onto a 1000 ?
