NTL rejecting my password from OE, but they accept it if i visit the webmail site ...
Hi,
Any help on this would be much appreciated.
OE has been getting my mail from ntl for ages, no probs,
until last week.
Then OE couldn't get my mail from ntl, username/password
failure.
I can go directly to the ntl.webmail site and get my mail
like that, with the same username/password, but OE cannot.
I have not altered any of the settings in OE, the password
is the same, and the username is the same, although i have
re-entered them both, just in case they might have got a
bit worn out or stale, but that made no difference.
I don't know what else to check.
Cheers, John

Re: NTL rejecting my password from OE, but they accept it if i visit the webmail site ...
hi
i had a similar problem ages ago.
this worked for me......
go into outlook express, click on "tools" "accounts" then highlight your email account and click "properties".
click on the "servers" tab.
retype the incoming mail pop: pop.ntlworld.com
retype the outgoing mail smtp: smtp.ntlworld.com
make sure your account name is correct with "john.smith" for example and the password is there. (tick remember password as appropriate).
then click "ok" and then "close" and try "send/receive mail" again.....

Re: NTL rejecting my password from OE, but they accept it if i visit the webmail site ...
Hi Steve,
Thanks for your reply,
i had re-typed everything in those boxes three or four times,
then earlier today i remembered that NTL's helpline is a free
number, so i rang them. Eventually i got through.
Turns out my username was incorrect.
The end part of the username ... "@ntlworld.com"
is not part of the username.
Ive never altered those settings since i got ntl, so i think
that they have altered things at their end, my email was ok
with it for many months till about a week ago, and the girl
at the support centre seemed to go straight for that before
anything else, so i wonder if i'm not the first with this
email query.
Anyway, however it happened, its ok now and i am happy again,
Cheers, John

Hi Steve,
I've just seen your PM, and you mentioned that also.
The end part shouldn't be there.
I have no idea why it should be different now,
maybe it wasn't there before, but i don't recall making any
alterations to it. Very strange.
Still thats Win98se for you, half technology and half black magic.
Cheers, John

Re: NTL rejecting my password from OE, but they accept it if i visit the webmail site ...
In a similar vein since NTL screwed up my email account 2 weeks ago and reinstated me albeit with a new master username I was able to use my original extra box username but my wife could not. The techy's could not understand this until we tried again and it returned "too few characters". So for the past 2 years she has had a 4 character username but all of a sudden it has to be more!
So, not quite sure how we can get her old email Folders if ever!

Hi GBH,
you are of course welcome, and i am glad my little problem
has been of some help to you (and maybe others)
From xtopher's experience with the username, and my own
opinion that i made no alterations, i now feel pretty sure
that they have altered things at their end, maybe only a
little bit.
Regards, John

this is not a result of anything ntl has done - rather it is the result of the settings becoming on your PC

I am not so sure.
At one time, it didn't matter if you had the '@ntlworld.com' there or not, it would work either way. This I know for certain because when I first became a customer in 1999 that was how it was all set up.

AV software chages the setting in order intercept and scan for virii but AFAIK @ntlworld.com has never worked - it certainly hasn't work in the last 3 years for sure.
