Intel blunders again!

computer chip maker Intel has been forced to announce that there will be no 4GHZ pentium 4 chip, the company will instead focus its efforts on its new dual core chip model for the future upcoming CPU's

but the company did specify that it will be releasing slower chips but with preformance enhancing features.

Re: Intel blunders again!

How is not going to 4GHz a "blunder" exactly?

Re: Intel blunders again!

How does this class as a blunder? It seems like a sensible business decision, if the 4gHz isn't going to be ready in time (of course R&D is not a precise science) then they're going to release a chip that is faster than current offerings but doesn't have the faster core.

Realistically there's little real-world difference now between, say, a 3gHz and 3.4gHz processor in a computer - which for consumers is actually a good thing as it prolongs the life-span of their PCs.

Re: Intel blunders again!

its a blunder because its one of a long line of faliures by Intel to increase its maket share by releasing product efficiently and fault free, its scaling back its operations where it was expected by manafacturers such as DELL to release chips such as the 4GHZ so they could have them aligned with the plans they had to release desktops.

oems suffer more if they are told by Intel that they are releasing something then backtrack.

Re: Intel blunders again!

Hmmm...I'd probably say that was a pretty harsh definition of a blunder. Bear in mind that Intel currently has over 80% market share of all PC chips, so they're not doing too bad!

And I'd say that this move is more positive, if you read the last line of the link you posted then it says that the new chips will produce less heat. Add to this that the tweaks they're making will still improve performance and I'd say that it was positive.

EDIT: Oh and I forgot to mention the $8.5 billion revenue in the last quarter which is up 5%, compared to the $44 million posted by AMD in the same period, which actually decreased in the last two quarters.

Re: Intel blunders again!

they are loosing to AMD, this non release will further make that a widening gap, although Intel will focus steadfast on the new chips, but it will be a wait and see game whether they can 'one up' AMD in providing faster processors in the 64bit/dual core generations.

EDIT: thanks richard m i knew Intel in no way had 80% of the market.

Unless I'm mistaken X-boxes don't make up 30% of the PC market.

Well I hear what you're saying, but I think that 64-bit processing is pretty much of a white elephant right now anyway and most PC users couldn't give a monkey's how many bits they've got - it's about how fast the computer is.

Mind you, I'm not going to get worked up over it, I really couldn't care less how well Intel is doing, but I'm not going to join in the ritual knocking for the sake of it!

Blunder???

Intel aren't stupid, they're busy working away on the dual core processor's ready for next year, expect AMD to go the dual core route in the not too distant future.

Ha, do you realise just how big a company Intel are?

Plus, they are introducing 64-bit (EMT64) CPU's this year (XEON & Pentium 4 (Prescott). Which will run on Microsoft's Windows XP x64 Edition same as AMD x86-64 architecture.

Re: Intel blunders again!

Intel are following AMD these days...AMD introduced the first dual-core chips (and quad-core ) and were the first to use x86-64 architecture.
AMD is quickly becoming the market leader.

Er...whatever!

We're talking about dual core's on one CPU die, not two seperate processor's

Re: Intel blunders again!

Touche Sir, they "demoed" a dual core Opteron, but they're hardly on the shelves yet are they. Where's this quad core CPU that's been introduced then? All they said was they hope to ship them around 2007.
