Will a BT Phone Work WIth NTL Caller ID?
I have a NTL telephone account and a BT caller ID phone (BT Synergy 3505).
I phoned up NTL and they said the local exchange was able to provide Caller ID but they only knew that it would work with ntl phones! I didn't even know ntl made phones!?
Does anyone know if NTL's caller ID works with BT phones (specifically the 3505 but any BT phone would be a start).
Many thanks for any info,
Andy

I can't see it being a problem either, maybe a NTL bod will pop in and confirm it

It depends on your local area really where in the country are you? It is dependant on the equipment being present in the CAB and what Switch is used.
I could find out but for example some Caller ID enabled phones will only work in 1 part of Luton where others will work in the whole of luton etc.

Re: Will a BT Phone Work WIth NTL Caller ID?
Im in Oxford (Headington) and NTL (South Central) said the exchange would handle it but couldn't guarentee the phone would. I thought I;d read somewhere (long ago) the the able companies and BT used different systems. Maybe that's a thing of the past and phones these days are all compatable.
From my experience NTL billing is fine as long as you don't wish to change anything, adding caller ID then taking it off if it's incompatible could be painful or maybe I'm being to paranoid? It's just I've had a few guys in the office who reckon that their Direct Debits were wrong for ages after they changed their services.
Thanks to all that have replied so far.
Regards,
Andy

Phoned up the BT Synergy "helpdesk", they told me they didn't have a clue whether it's compatible on ntl, very helpful, and advised me to ring ntl!
I guess the answer is to try it.

Indeed, it's gonna cost you £1.50 to find out, give it a go, we'll all learn.
There have been some old threads on this basically some of the NTL network does not use standard CLID signalling so can be screwy or work intermitantly or work when another non CLID phone is also plugged in (I think this happened to Towny). Other parts are standard CLID and any phone will work.
Being as NTL don't know the full CLID capabilities of their network at any level and won't be spending money to work it out (IMHO) trial and error is your solution.

Re: Will a BT Phone Work WIth NTL Caller ID?
The only guarantee with Caller ID is to get BT. With NTL it's a pure gamble. Just don't go paying for expensive phones with caller display like I did only to be told you can't get it (let alone whether they work)

Re: Will a BT Phone Work WIth NTL Caller ID?
I got them to "turn caller display on" about 5 minutes before you told me it wouldn't work. Doh!
They said give it half an hour. I tried it 5 minutes ago and of course it didn't work! Even though I was phoning from my second (ntl) line. I'd be interested to know if it would work with a branded "ntl phone" though!
I'll give it til the weekend and if it's still not working I think I'll go back to BT and just keep my cable modem with ntl. Actually it might be doing me a favour, at least none of the marketing companies that wake me on a Saturday morning (after a long late shift) would have my number!

Re: Will a BT Phone Work WIth NTL Caller ID?
Yep, Caller ID worked fine with BT - the only problem was they were bl**dy expensive and it took hours to figure out the bill - hopefully they've changed and simplified their billing!? I moved to ntl because cable modems were available in Oxford long before bt put in ADSL.
Will ntl allow me to just carry on with the cable modem and not take a phone line as well?
Cheers,
Andy
