Re: world war II

this site has some numbers - it makes interesting reading, especially in relation to the Soviet Union.

compared to the figures for WW1

Re: world war II

First of all, you need to decide on a date for the start of the war. The Americans would say 7 December 1941. We would say 3 September 1939. The Poles and the Germans would say 1 September 1939. Some would argue for the Marco Polo Bridge incident in 1937 which marked the start of the 1937-45 Sino-Japanese War.

Re: world war II

Personally I would say war was inevitable when the French imposed the Treaty of Versaille on Germany in 1919. Or perhaps I'm being rather harsh there????

You could argue that 1914-45 was one long war aimed at German domination of Europe with a 20 year peace in the middle. But you're right about Versailles. Maynard Keynes, in 1919 in his Economic Consequences of the Peace, foresaw the stupidity of the Versailles treaty.

I appreciate where you are coming from, SDA, but we cannot discuss a 'world' war only in the context of its effect on 'us', our involvement has it's honour & it's place, though

Re: world war II

Myself and a couple of friends had talked about going over to Normandy for the commerations. My mate Joe's wife is American and was well up for the trip, so much so that her father (who was a Ranger during Vietnam) is comming over. Unfortunately, about 3 months ago I learned that there is nowhere left to stay in Normandy. Every hotel, motel, B&B, and campsite has benn booked in advance.

When we where disgussing where to go and what to see, Peggy was up for all the usual places, Point du Hoc, Omagh and Utah Beaches, the American War Cemetaries etc. Then Joe and I chipped in and noted she wasnt going just to the american sector of the invasion area. That there where places we wanted to see like, The Marne Bridges (Pegasus Bridge), Carpique, Falaise, and the German Military Cemetary where Hauptsturmfuhrer Michael Whittmann is burried. Plus while we where in the area we though a trip the Somme Battlefield and the cemetaries there would be a worthwhile excursion.

The shocking thing about all this was that Peggy had never heard of most of the places we talked about visiting, and certainly none of the noteable places in the British sector of the Invasion sector.

Typicl bloody yanks.
