I know.

The difference in wired and wireless has nothing to do with his BB connection.

There are 2 people in Coventry still on the 'proof of concept trial' connection getting expected speeds up to 190Mb. I mostly got 186Mb. Although the trial is officially over, the techy has left the connections running, but not is fixing them when 100Mb upgrade work produces fatal interference. My trial connection died some weeks ago.

Apart from that there are no ordinary members of the public getting near 200Mb.( Corporate connections will sometimes be much higher.) If they are getting high results it is because their home system is struggling to give the processor time needed for Java or Flash-based speed tests. In these cases they get wild results with the dial needle all over the place and occasionally hitting very high or very low figures. Many complaints about VM arise from problems with people's own systems. This can be put right through a processor upgrade or reducing / switching off the number of programmes running in the background whilst you run tests.

Re: Speed speed more speed

It is also caused by some AV progs, Kaspersky being the worst offender. Disabling AV while running the test solves it though.

Precisely. That is one of the background progs I had in mind. I solved the AV prog issue by using Microsoft Security Essentials instead of one of the big AV players. This runs with virtually no processor usage. Just in case a nasty bug slips through I keep SpyHunter in reserve, but not running in the background.

Re: Speed speed more speed

the high speedtest results is more to do with the AV programs proxy the test itself and the speedtest gives the result from the proxy to the browser.

During the Coventry speed trials we were asked to check our processor usage during the speed tests. If the usage was consistently up near 90% we were advised to find ways of reducing processor usage by other programmes. When I was trialling a modem configured for 370Mb/25Mb I couldn't get consistent speeds until I upgraded my processor to a decent quad core. Then they settled close to 370Mb/24Mb.

Are you telling me processor usage is not an issue?

he said background programs are more of an issue.

computers nowadays are more than capable, but people load them full of programs which constantly run in the background. Iv been asked to service computers and upgrade them becuase they "needed more Ram and faster processors, all I do is format them, install xp/7, send it back will a bill for new processor and ram, and make myself a fat bit of profit

the people i deal with dont know much about computers, they know how to install crap onto them, things like limewire, msn, yahoo messenger, bittorrent clients. also, i find a load of trial software and games!! most of which, the trials have run out, and all they need is un-installing!

another 'slow down' is antivirus and firewall. people have norton, which slows the PC down no end, they also have anti virus software which runs scheduled scans daily, and they moan when the computers freezing becuase the scan is set to exempt or high priority
