Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon Released Today

Oh, that, yeah. That's just when the images haven't loaded. Perhaps timed out loading them, & as a result Opera displayed the alternate text for each image that didn't load. The CF server was a bit busy earlier & got a little bogged down to the extent that 1 time I got a message saying the server was too busy & to try again soon, & another the page loaded but without the stylesheet [plain text on a white background].

I've seen weirder than that happen, but it's kinda hard to describe. The next time it happens I'll try & remember to grab a screenshot.

Probably was just some kinda timeout or something but the whole lot was flashing mad crazy stuff for about 30 seconds,until it settled down to what i snapped.

i've had a screwed thread that spat out a load of garbage instead of what should have.

I manage that just fine without a forum hissy fit doing it for me

I keep getting caught out by the fact KDE reopens whatever apps you had open when you shutdown

You can turn that behaviour off...

Go into the KDE control centre --> KDE Components --> Session Manager & select On Login Start with an empty session

Anything you want to always start on login put a symlink in ~/.kde/Autostart/

That's for the TIP although i'm not entirely sure I want to.
Unless I'm playing a game or something (in which case i'd probably be in windows anyway) most of the stuff that pops up is stuff I'm using all the time anyway (i usually have thunderbird/firefox/pidgin/amerok open anyway...

Its only when I leave several directories open.etc and forget to close them that its a bit of a pain.

Just had a quick go of ubuntu on my server - everything spot on, except the title text on every window insists on being ~150 point, despite me telling it anything otherwise. How irritating... anyone got any ideas what's up?

Enabling/disabling compiz fusion seemed not to make any difference...

I`m assuming,just from the compiz fusion mention that you`ve installed a full blown desktop on a server machine of some sort......???
Does it have a gfx card?have you installed drivers??
Can you mabey take a screenshot because i`m not sure i fully understand myself... sorry.

What have you told Ubuntu and how did you tell it whatever you told it???

Got a few updates through and now the 64bit version of UBUNTU is almost perfect, running full compiz with no problem now, just one issue remains, SAMBA file transfers with a Gb card are half the speed of Debian with the same setup. Config says that card is running 1,000Mb Full Duplex so don't know what the problem can be.

Overall, this has to be the best 64bit desktop OS available, running Flash and Multi-Media since the update has resulted in no problems. Unlike openSUSE, UBUNTU applications are all 64bitis.
Is there any reason to run 32bit UBUNTU on a 64bit chip, not any more.

Flash? I thought that there wasn't a 64bit version of Flash for any OS, & that Adobe had no plans on making 1 anytime soon? Or do you mean running it in some sort of 32bit compatibility mode like XP x64 does?

Thats what i like about nfs.....none of that transfer time lark with mounted shares

Sorry, wasn't very clear. Desktop version on a second hdd in my server/media centre. I think it's an ATI 9250, can't quite remember - haven't installed any drivers as it autodetected the GPU ok, I guess that's the obvious first thing to try!

If that doesn't help, i'll post a screenshot later. ta

It is the 32bit Flash plugin but the browser is 64bit, Novell install the 32bit version of Firefox in the 64bit version, I think Vista comes with 32 and 64bit IE.
The UBUNTU way is much less clunky, and gives you the option of installing GNASH or FLASH.

Novell? Novell own Suse, not Ubuntu.

That's what I'd heard as well, though as I haven't tried Vista I can only comment on XP x64, which also comes with both 32 and 64bit flavours of IE.

Ubuntu has 64bit Firefox, all the applications are 64bit.
SUSE 64bit contains 32bit apps, off the top of my head Firefox and Open Office are both 32bit.
I tried Gnash but I didn't get any sound.

Strange thing with Ubuntu Gutsy, for the first time I can access all 4GB of memory on my system, previously could only access 3.3GB, but, memory usage is now showing over 1GB which works out at using more than the additional 0.7GB than previously, so I seem to have less memory available for apps now, weird.

I just wish to add my try at 7.10 so far across a whole range of Machines to give an example of why it does not suit everybody all the time....
( I will only mention the main bits of Hardware that matter to this subject)

Compaq 9105
Nvidia 420 2 Go, Broadcom Wireless
Had everything working a Treat, 3D Desktop, Wireless - the works, shame Screen is only 1024x768 though - work laptop btw.

Dell 840
Nvidia 420 2 Go, Linksys PCMCIA Wireless Card, 1400x1050 Screen.
Struggled all the way with this one, 3D Worked but was Frame by Frame (very slow indeed), maybe do to Res and the card cannot handle it? Wireless tried many guides and in the end stuck a NetGear one in there, worked straight away.

Desktop - Core2Duo 2.4GHz
3D worked fine as expected as it has a GeForce 7600GT in there but the mouse was a whole different ball game. I have the Microsoft 6000 Desktop set which includes a 5 Button Wireless Laser Mouse. Button 4/5 no go and movement is VERY fast around the screen. Scrolling is so fast, I move my wheel on a web page - not matter how long and be at the bottom. Nothing in the way of built in stuff for the mouse to sort it, case of follow Many different "Terminal" guides to sort - gave up !!!

Desktop - Athlon64 3700
ATI X300 Car in there and this is where it hit a dead end in regards 3D Desktop, followed a lot of guides but it was a bit like the Dell, so slow it hurt to even move the screen - as above gave up.

Desktop - Dell GX620
This is probably the only machine out of all of them that actually worked as it should. The Graphics card was only the built in Intel 945G but 3D is fast and works out of the box. The mouse by luck is your normal 2 Button / scroll wheel wired - so again no problems there.

Summary
As you can see I use Linux all the time now on my Dell GX620 and the Dell Laptop but it cannot replace the desktop until the drivers for Graphics Card (mainly ATI) and Broadcom are sorted and a easier way to function with 5+ Button mice for example and why on earth does Backspace in Firefox go up the page instead of back one??
