They took the 'Christ' out of it? How do you figure that one out?

Because Christ is Christianity. Christmas is a Christian celebration.

Re: To Quote the council Rep "politically correct"

Repeating your post isn't going to make it any more correct.

They did not cancel Christmas, they did not take Christ out of it. They celebrated just as they do every year - as Christmas.

Nobody is saying that they did or the intention was to cancel it. only you.
Where is the word Christ in Winterval?
Winterval was a word to describe the multicultural events over the 'Christmas' period. to include all cultures and not to exclude other religions.
'They' celebrated it as normal because they could hardly cancel it.

Here's a piece on GMTV.

Found this on the subject on Wiki:

Quote:
The council responded that "Christmas is the very heart of Winterval", saying that Christmas-themed events were prominent among those included in Winterval, and that Christmas-related words and symbols were prominent in its publicity material. While the Winterval season was longer than the Christmas season, Christmas was the focus of the relevant portion of Winterval.
Sound pretty much like Christmas was celebrated as normal there, along with other events.

Again, repeating your post does not make it right, it just makes you look like you're running out of options. Christmas has always been celebrated as Christmas, nothing has been changed about it. Your example of the 'Rainbow' sheep myth is wrong because that would be a main part having been changed.

Nothing was changed about Christmas. In fact have a look at Birmingham council's website. Spot the occasional reference to Christmas? See the massive references to Winterval?

No council has tried to change, alter or water-down Christmas.

88 - 2 fat ladies will be called a myth after the event too.

I don't think you're understanding Russ. this happened in 97-98. they tried to make the Christmas period a multicultural thing. they come up with the phrase Winterval. Winterval included everybody.
they had a lot of stick about it and that they should leave Christmas, Christmas.
that's why you won't find the word Winterval on the councils website now. you'll just see the word Christmas.

Quote:

What was the intention of Winterval then?

The change is being made because city council officials hope to create a more multi-cultural atmosphere in keeping with the city's mix of ethnic groups

Re: To Quote the council Rep "politically correct"

You really can be arrogant sometimes. If "n o b o d y h a s s a i d o t h e r w i s e" then why are you going on about 'Winterval'? What your point? That it was 'changed to include other faiths'?

Christmas has always been celebrated by all UK councils. For 2 years Birmingham added other events at the time (starting before and finishing after the Christmas period) which did not detract from the festive celebration. Christmas banners were paraded about the city as normal.

Are you getting the message yet? Christmas was still Christmas in Birmingham for those 2 years. The only difference being was they also offered something for other faiths as well. If it was the political correctness that you're so obsessed about then they'd have ignored 'public outcry' and continued to call it 'Winterval' every year because, as I'm sure you know, "this country bends over backwards to accomodate foreigners" doesn't it?
