Kymmy and Moldova, I think this one has confused you both a little. Actually it isn't a Virgin Media issue so why the Mods have left it I don't know.

Re: Setting up microsoft outlook to send and recieve old email address with virgin
Hi pip
I dont think that the smtp.orangehome.co.uk will work as im not a orange user. Im trying to set up to use an old freeserve email through virgin, as explianed before other isp ive been with have supplied me a smtp to send out email from old address eg cj@bigbeats.fsnet.co.uk and even googlemail address. I think im going to try and track down a UK number for virgin.

All they will say is that outlook is unsupported and the same with your 3rd party email accounts as they are not covered by the support scope.
UK numbers are 151 or 0845 454 1111

It is a virgin media issue as he's trying to relay through his VM connection using the VM SMTP..
Though yes it should be moved to email forum.. In the future though if you're that worried about the forum it's in then please next time use the report post button

Re: Setting up microsoft outlook to send and recieve old email address with virgin
With Outlook it is not necessary to relay through VM's smtp server, I don't.
Orangehome is the old freeserve server. Freeserve-Wanadoo-Orange, all the same server.

Re: Setting up microsoft outlook to send and recieve old email address with virgin
Yeah your right about VM's support just shows how bad their customer service is coz every other isp i have used in recent years HAS been able to help, think i might just go back to o2 not one problem with them.
Pip so but you do need to relay through you new smtp servers i cannot use thr orange one i have tried!
Well anymore ideas guys

Re: Setting up microsoft outlook to send and recieve old email address with virgin
A) Can you receive emails from your freeserve account?
B) If you check the link in the post I made earlier it will take you to a forum where freeserve users have sucessfully used orange servers to receive and send freserve emails even though they don't have an Orange account.
As I said before this is not really a VM problem it is an Outlook problem.
Use the Orange website to get the correct settings for Outlook (including ports) If Outlook is set correctly for recieving emails then the problem is in the smtp settins as these are only used for outgoing mail POP3 is your incoming. It has nothing to do with your ISP.

I don't believe you need to relay through VM. I don't for my non-VM account; I also set up a test GMail account recently in the way I'm describing.
IMO, you should specify all your settings as normal for freeserve, ignoring relay and set the smtp port to 587.
When you said you tried 587 without success, you didn't say which server name settings you were using. Sorry for troubling you with this repeat suggestion if you were using the standard freeserve serever names.

Do you mean you can receive your freeserve mail but not send?

If 587 doesn't work, Orange are blocking it. Port 25 is blocked by VM. You could try 465 (with SSL ticked). There is a full port list here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...P_port_numbers
and you're interested in those with SMTP for POP3 shown.
Also, there is merit in trying a different SMTP address like SMTP.orange.co.uk and experimentin with the various port numbers. That's a long shot but it is reported elsewhere (I forget where, sorry).
---------- Post added at 11:25 ---------- Previous post was at 10:44 ----------
I just tried something with my BTinternet account. I set the Outgoing Mail Server to smtp.ntlworld.com (maybe you'll substitute whatever your VM outgoing server is).
I unticked My outgoing server SMTP requires authentication (although I believe you could supply your VM credentials). SMTP port was 25.
And the test message sent OK.
