Totally agree with you on this one. I had one of the first hd sky boxes (for the world cup) when they came out, and that was £299. It`s just the premium we pay to be the first ones to play with the new kit. Same as anything really. The price will drop, albeit slowly I reckon.

A lot will depend on how long & how much you pay Virgin
Boxes will range from £49-£149
Monthly charge of £3 (expect XL (with premiums) & vip customers)

I got my new Sky HD box for free with a 12month contract which was half price and then at the end of that I got an extra 6 months half price so I guess it all depends on what deal you can get with sky. As for tivo it really needs to be cheaper.

Would that be the standard Sky+HD box you have though?. The 1TB box currently costs £279 including set up. The standard box is indeed free with free set up with the HD pack and if ordered online.
I don't think the advertised prices of Tivo or Sky's 1TB box are too bad at all for the certain group of customers they are aimed at, I doubt either will appeal just yet to the average subscriber but I doubt that's who they are aimed at anyway.

Neil Berkett announced that Virgin would launch TIVO boxes with smaller HDD at a later date , the standard Sky HD box has a 320 gb HDD with half partitioned for Anytime I think. Sky boxes record.more due to Mpeg 4 compression which I believe Virgin Will switch to at some point.

Virtually all new Sky+ HD boxes actually have 500GB HDD with 250GB reserved for personal use. In the unlikely event you get a non Amstrad model it will have (as you quite rightly say) 320GB with half reserved for personal use but this is very rare now.
I don't understand how adding 1TB to a box which is functionally identical to the standard box can add such a big cost to it although compared to high street models it still offers good value, as Tivo does.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. I.
My main reason for taking TIVO from launch is 1TB HDD ( I record a lot of American sport and the V+HD just doesn't cut it) , another reason is the advanced search as VM don't list stuff great now on the current OD menus. I will enjoy the search an actor feature as me and the Mrs always argue what somebody's been in before.

You probably know this anyway but you can search on an actor's name with V+ and even a V Box (assuming the name appears in the synopsis), obviously Tivo will have far more detailed search capabilities though.

Yes it is all of those things and hopefully more that make it worth the price to me. The Itb drive will be great but I wouldn't pay out just for that.

Does it tell Mr & Mrs Muppetman what the actors have been in before though? I know some will say, well |I can do that on my computer already but for one thing not everybody has ready access to a computer from their armchair. And they have got to fire up their computer bring up google look through the search results. It is being able to do it all frome one box. Like I say it is the complete package that has me interested not any one thing. I can watch youtube for instance on my laptop or even my ipod touch but it's not the ame as watching things on my tv with my family.

All I politely said is V+ can search on an actors name, just in case he wasn't aware of the feature, sorry.

Remote record is a great feature, I hope they don't limit it to just iphones but even if they do you can set it from the online TV guide which is actually up and running now I believe.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. I.
For me personally TIVO needs to do more, way more than it's going to do from launch to justify £199.99.
1TB HDD is a massive selling point however a 1TB HDD retails from as little as £44.99 if you shop around. I'm not seeing enough from the wonder box that is TIVO to justify the other £155.00 plus an ongoing monthly subscription.
It's a box which makes choosing what you watch on TV easier. Watching TV is the easiest and laziest thing that you can do. This is really just a coach potatoes toy aimed at people who find it difficult to read TV listings or too difficult to decide what they want to watch.
Again for me personally internet through my TV is not really a big selling point. I got bored of that ages ago via my games console. I've got a laptop and 50mb wireless in my house. If I need to go on the internet when watching TV I can already do that without TIVO.
I think it's all just a gimmick. What else do Virgin have in the pipeline for 2011, I hope they don't have all their eggs in the TIVO basket. In this current financial climate having a TV subscription via Virgin or SKY is a luxury item. At £199.99 per box plus further monthly costs I firmly believe this will be a flop until the box comes down to a more affordale price. I beleive the take up for SKY's Premium HD channels at £7.00 per month is still slow. If Virgin can't shift something that customers really wanted at £7.00 per month, TIVO has no chance.
I'm still all ears if someone wants to post what they beleive will change my mind about TIVO, the big selling point that I'm missing that will make customers think "WOW I really need that service".
Sorry if I've went off topic here, but this thread is hardly on topic these days anyway

Yes but Chad the box contains a lot more than just a HDD. You will always pay for new tech , I thought it was rumoured to be 189 all in to existing customers.
