Re: 10mb connection
I find that this speedtest can give wildly differing results in a run.
My widest spread was from 0.1M to 80M. But usually I'd average around 2-3Mb.
As a STB "cripple" i am happy(ish) with around 5-6M which is what I get for large downloads from well mirrored servers.
The "best" is the 132M+ I get at ntlhell.

Even with those speeds on the 10mb you can still get just over 1.2mb/s which is the max for 10mb connection.

You misunderstand, he's reporting 1.2Mbit/s, about 150kbyte/s, not 1.2Mbyte/s which is about max for a 10Mbit/s connection.

Re: 10mb connection
No, no I understood him, I know what you mean, I've had the same results as him but using a download manager I've received data at that rate.

Re: 10mb connection
I've recently been upgraded from 3mb (which was fine) to 10mb - which is ~10kb a sec with pings of about 500ms (!)
It's ok, but falls to it's knees around 4pm, and is useless until about midnight.
Currently:
Fri, 05 May 2006 17:37:17 GMT
1st 512K took 1562 ms = 327.8 KB/sec, approx 2701 Kbps, 2.64 Mbps
2nd 512K took 27250 ms = 18.8 KB/sec, approx 155 Kbps, 0.15 Mbps
3rd 512K took 6844 ms = 74.8 KB/sec, approx 616 Kbps, 0.6 Mbps
4th 512K took 4859 ms = 105.4 KB/sec, approx 868 Kbps, 0.85 Mbps
Overall Average Speed = approx 1085 Kbps, 1.06 Mbps
What that doesn't say is that pings in-game, and generally, are useless.
A web page will take about 5 seconds to load.
Most importantly, a World of Warcraft (two independant UDP streams of events) gives semi-crap download (latencies of ~300ms, not that much of a problem) but the upload is utterly crap. I'm getting latencies on upload via UDP of between 1000ms and 7500ms, which is just ridiculous.
Next year (contract ends in june, IIRC) I'm going for 8196/512 ADSL!
Edit: formatting bug

Re: 10mb connection
Mine's now up to an average 6.8 mb/sec. However I can't test pings at the moment scientifically.
Everyone in the area comes home from work, plays with the net for a few hours, NTL bandwidth goes down the toilet, then goes to bed, bandwidth returns...

Re: 10mb connection
I have been experiencing some poor d/l speeds recently so have decided to run a speed test. I've been on 10mb for a few months now and the speeds have never been as slow as this.
Here are my speed results:
Sun, 07 May 2006 11:43:21 GMT
1st 512K took 1937 ms = 264.3 KB/sec, approx 2178 Kbps, 2.13 Mbps
2nd 512K took 1625 ms = 315.1 KB/sec, approx 2596 Kbps, 2.54 Mbps
3rd 512K took 1343 ms = 381.2 KB/sec, approx 3141 Kbps, 3.07 Mbps
4th 512K took 2015 ms = 254.1 KB/sec, approx 2094 Kbps, 2.04 Mbps
Overall Average Speed = approx 2502 Kbps, 2.45 Mbps
Anyone got any advice?! That was done with nothing else using the connection. My location (if important) is Derby (DE1). I'm also using a cable modem (one of the very first silver ones) and using ethernet connection.
Thanks
Tim

Re: 10mb connection
Have a look here - http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/sp...54659707424222
Even though thats the speed its been tested at, I'm stilling getting full speed downloads, which is what I'm trying to say!
With nothing else happening, no multi-player games being played, nothing being downloaded, msn messenger closed, anything else that messes with the internet connection disabled for the test.

Re: 10mb connection
I watched a program on google video a few nights back and it started skipping, I clicked the link to where can contact them for feedback and got this reply.
"Our service requires a broadband connection of 400kbit or higher to allow a skip free viewing experience, we suggest you contact your isp to upgrade your service to this level."
watched this morning at 6am fine.

Been on 10mb since December, was upgraded from 3mb FOC and yet to see any speed increase. Tech support have told me there are issues which should be resolved shortly. That was over a month ago , so what now? they have put me on different server. Yes I get 6-7 mb for alittle while then back to 2 or less than 1mb
|
I'd reccomend you try something like Newsgroups. When I try the speed test here I usually don't get full speed anymore however when I download via newsgroups I always max the connetion.
When I try http://fuller.zen.co.uk/test/ I don't always get full 10meg though, it usually maxes out then for a couple seconds goes to 5-7 then maxes etc etc. So probably NTL messing around with port 80 but I'm not gonna moan as I hardly download much from sites anyway.
