That's because they were previously arriving by lorry and were largely undetected and those are not included in any figures. 7,600 were caught in 2018, so add that to the 299 arriving by "small boat". How come if in 2018 only 299 arrived, that 1,215 were sent back? Far more than a mere 299 people were living in the camp at Calais. We're talking 4 or 5 figures with more that arrived every day.

I never understood why people from another country, sneaking into our country, couldn't be shot as spies once caught

Not sure if the present mob in charge actually already have their own version of Mathematics.
It seems very much like Peter borrows to pay Paul, who originally borrowed from Clive, who is now bankrupt and on the dole and now far better off than he was.
