Freeview HD channels often broadcast in 1080p. ITV and Channel 4 appear to use it most frequently. I was surprised the BBC didn't use it for the Rio Olympics.
It's been available of Freeview since 2011.

Indeed, http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/researcha...bc-hd-on.shtml caused a few issues at the time with sony tvs because they maintained different settings for each picture type mode.

Out of interest do VM honour 1080p broadcasts when they're available?

Are you in agreement of the systems they use to delivery these higher resolution signals?

Re: TiVo HD Picture Quality Vs Freeview HD

they get the signal from the source its wot they do with the signal when they get it and resend it to us.

you could compare it to a tin of beans there all the same ingredients, but all taste different.

No, broadcast HD on VM is always 1080i. The V+ and V-HD boxes don't support 1080p.

The only 1080p available on VM is from Netflix.

Have to say that Sky Sports 1 HD is bad today.

Not sure if its down to the host broadcaster as watching the football or down to VM

The TV may do the freeview decoding and upscaling in the same chip, which means the upscaling might be different between freeview and external HDMI source.
I asked about how upscaling was done by the STB/TV on a technical forum and was told that the STB/TV plays no part in upscaling as this is done completely by the broadcaster and it just reproduces the feed it's given.

When I asked if upscaled material used the same HDD space as true HD material when recording, I was told that it actually uses more!

I have read people say on forums that XYZ box is good at upscaling though

Just type into Google - what resolution is 4K. Or to save you some time, here is a link from that search... Which shows it isn't 100% straightforward
