Re: TiVo - 50,000 have registered Interest...

I'm rather puzzled by Branson's comment:

I think that we have finally got a weapon that can give Sky a run for their money.

At the moment my Freeview box (on TV no 2) is quite capable of recording anything I want, including series whilst the old DVD recorder that I use with the TV with the Virgin Media box will record anything from VM. Surely Tivo is simply a programme recorder with a few added bells and whistles? It doesn't supply extra programmes, or does it? So why does Branson rate it as a killer app? Am I missing something about Tivo?

Probably because for the same reason that you can't compare Freeview to Sky either.

Branson wasn't comparing VM's new TiVo service to Freeview, he was comparing it to VM's thorn in their side, Sky.

You can record three programs simultaneously whilst watching a recorded program on one TiVo box, that alone is something that neither Freeview or Sky can do, but that is not all the box can do.

I take your point about Tivo being versatile but the point I was making is that I consider that Branson is overegging the pudding. With only 24 hours in the day are there many people who want to regularly record 3 programs at once? Once the novelty wears off will anyone but a minority actually be regularly using these facilities? Also, as has been said elsewhere in the thread, you have to pay for Tivo.

I may well be wrong but I'm afraid that I don't share Branson's enthusiasm. We shall no doubt see.

21:00hrs - 23:00hrs, which is the main programme time, it really comes in handy. TiVo is all about time-shifting your tv viewing as most TiVo users don't watch live tv, they record it for when they are ready to watch.

Exactly. I am watching the cricket at the moment but have to go out soon so will set the recording going but also have the budget to be recorded. so thats two tuners used up. We do find that most that we watch has been pre-recorded.

When we go on holiday in June I hope we have Tivo then as the extra recording space will be very useful.
