Isn't this problem down to the built in software for wireless controllers in Windows. I used to get it on an old wireless Netgear adaptor. What i did to fix it was to turn off the option for allowing Windows to control the device and used the wirless software that come with the adaptor.

I can't remember for sure where this option is now in Win XP as i am running Win 7 x64 and everything is completely different on this OS.
