DLink wireless problem
 
Good morning.

Hopefully someone will be able to help me with this problem. I apologise if it has appeared previously, I did do a search without success.

Virgin have kindly given me a new DLink (DIR-615) router. I have Virgin cabled broadband. We have a wireless network which has a static main computer, a Dell Inspiron laptop and a couple of Playstation3’s.

I have had no problems setting the network up. I have secured it with WPA2-PSK.

The two Playstation’s connect to the network, no problem.

The laptop can see the network, it connects ok, but 3 minutes in, it kicks us out. Whilst we are connected we can use the shared internet connection.

There are two network icons in the taskbar. One says we are connected, the other says status “Authenticating”.

I looked at the “diagnostics log”. It seems to connect to the network for a few minutes, then disconnects itself again. I am work at the moment and I can’t remember the exact details. I did save a copy of the log, but I forgot to email it to work. :(

Hopefully someone will have come across the problem before, and will be able to help.

I went through your instructions. Everything connected ok, except the laptop. Same problem. It lets me on for 3 minutes thens disconnects me. It connects again straight away, then 3 minutes later the same happens.

I went into the routers settings and changed the security to WEP. It connected without any problems! So I guess I must be doing something wrong with the WPA Network key.

Can anybody help?

Dombey i had a similar problem with a wireless printer, i think its a channel setting also as well as the key. Its best not to have on AUTO channel selection. Pick a channel that gives u best results and remain with it.

My Printer was up all day yesterday, today it dropped it and wouldnt accept the key. I set a manual channel and changed the key and seems all ok once again.

Hi Dombey Blue.

I've seen this problem a number of times. Most require different solutions.

This is most likely to be a problem with XP, one which i hasten to add Microsoft still haven't fixed. If you have an Intel wireless adapter built in to the laptop then its likely that there is no permanent fix for it. There is something you can do however.
Change your Security mode to WPA (TKIP) this should then connect OK with no dropouts. I would advise using a long passkey, perhaps 22-26 characters long alphnumeric with some special characters in there as well. This may seem a little OTT but, this is the safest option if you don't take your security serious nobody else will.
This is of course all dependant on whether your other equipment supports it.

Anyway good luck, and post back if it's still a problem.

Tried changing the security settings to TKIP, but it was still the same. Can connect, but kicked off after exactly three minutes!! :mad:

Just to eliminate the passkey issue, try changing it to something really simple like "123456" as an example see if it works then move on from there. Make sure that the security mode is not Enterprise it should only be PSK or TKIP modes.
Update all Wireless card drivers for your system.
Are you using the windows S/W (WZC service) to control the wireless card or vendor S/W?
Can you connect using an Ethernet cable?
What is the second icon (the one that says “authenticating”)?
Are you using DHCP? Do you get an IP address during the 3 minutes? If not check your IP “pool size” this is the amount of IP address’ available to use.
Are the playstation’s cabled or wireless? Try leaving them switched off, then connect with laptop.
You said in your original post that “Whilst we are connected we can use the shared internet connection.” What do you mean by shared internet connection? Do you have ICS enabled?
Sorry more questions than answers at the moment but stick with it. It’s the authentication that seems a little odd here as WPA/WPA2 TKIP or PSK don’t need it. It’s only enterprise mode that would really require proper authentication.

Right, I am not very computer literate, I just know enough to get by.

I tried it with an easier passkey, just the same.

I updated the Wireless card driver and guess what...

It worked:D.

Hi

It is a Dell inspiron Laptop. It has a 1390 Wlan Mini-card.

Thanks very much people, i was having the same problem. my connection kept dropping every 4 1/2 mins and i couldn't figure out why, that is until someone mentioned updating the driver of my wireless card, the thought had never occurred to me b4 as all my drivers are fully upto date. but then i had the strangest of thoughts and got an older driver and now it works... don't know why but it does, so thank you.

does any1 know why this now works?
