From the first image you posted it looks like your primary USB port is 'enhanced' and is capable of 'high speed'. However, the hub is only 'full speed' and this is why you're seeing the initial warning. Sounds like Dell made a big boo boo here! Your only hope is to find a USB port that doesn't go via the hub. Check the manual.

Just in case anyone was wondering (no didn't think so) took unit back (offered me a replacement (no thanks)) - Bought a ICY BOX unit and a harddrive plugged it in and .....

USB2.0 - Fast as ...
Got one with Firewire also just in case
