Re: Slow Speeds...

Phoned BB Support again today. They got me to run the usual stuff they do[pings to bbc etc]anyway as they still say there isnt a problem! their excuse today is "Youre firewall is causing it,dont use a firewall and NTL

Where do they get these people from? the person in question then proceeded to offer advice and ping my Modem.

Ran 1 test and said " Yes its a little slow" "turn the firewall off"

I had left the firewall off anyway as my connection is still terrible but failed to mention this to him

Runs 2nd test[firewall still off] "Ahh thats better, now its working better"

Are they trained to spout BS from birth in a NTL breeding camp?

Anyway connection still useless and as far as NTL can see there isnt a issue.According to them "We have had no reports of other people with connection issues"

YEH RIGHT!

Re: [Merged] Slow Speeds...

Im on the 3mb BB service and my connection was running fine till a few days ago where now my upload and download has decreased slightly to the point i hit a max of 2.5mb download and around 31kb/s upload....when tested on adsl guide.org at any point during the day

i live in Essex and if im reading this thread correctly would i be right in saying my problem is due to the modem config file aswell?

Re: [Merged] Slow Speeds...

I've tried a lot of firewalls, software and hardware, and none of them ever caused issues out of the box with downloading on regular ports i.e. web, ftp, smtp and nntp. Why on earth are some NTL people suggesting firewalls are an issue in regular web usage? I know a badly configured firewall may cause problems but if a connection is running smoothly and problems suddenly occur; the last thing I would look at is the firewall. The only possiblilty of a firewall being the cause is corruption within the firewall software itself or the registry.
NTL should provide modems with built in port blocking for all but the most basic services (out of the box) that are able to be interrogated from tech support.Obviously configurable for DMZ or opening of selected ports by the user if they have a clue what they're doing.I'm sure it wouldn't cost that much and would probably save a load of cash through saved bandwidth from infected machines.
It's not like the UK isn't hosting enough botnets right now. I hope the rep told you to turn the firewall back on at the end of the tests.

Sorry for going OT, hope you get the problem resolved.
