Is there any news on the rumours about ESPN launching a sports news channel and ESPN 2 and the red button in the next couple of months.

ESPN 2, ESPN News and ESPN Red Button forum discussions seems to be based on the rumour on MB's blog, that's what people seem to always refer to anyway. I haven't read much else about it but given the pricing of ESPN it seems quite a big leap to me.

The problem for me with ESPN is the lack of live UK sports rights, I could not care less about the climax for the titles in both the German or Dutch football leagues

I think ESPN have yet to show whether they are going to become a big player in the uk market and take on SKY.

It's OK as one of the Jewels of the XL tv pack but if they becomes a stand alone pay channels like SKY sports, I would not be subscribing, they missed a trick with not going for the football league rights!

There was a pretty big surprise in the week when it emerged that ESPN had not bid for any package in the Football league rights auction. Sky had no competition by all accounts and saved millions of pounds on what they paid before.
We all know what a massive organisation ESPN is, but I would have thought that if they really interested in getting more UK football rights they would have been in for them to fill out there live action from the UK.
It will be interesting to see now if they will do battle with Sky for Premier League rights when they come up for auction in a couple of Years I am now more sceptical than I was, IMO they will carve the rights up between them so they do not pay to much.

Their current pricing structure probably wouldn't support it.
That's not to say it won't in future though.

Correct mate I'm stating that for me the combination of the two makes it worthwhile even though ESPN shows to much foreign football.

At the moment l have my doubts about Espn becoming a serious rival to Sky, are they just going to pick up cheap foreign sports rights or will they take on Sky.

As long as they market it the way they do it can surely never really compete with Sky.
It dosent add up.

I can only guess they`re saving their money for bigger fish such as Premier league football. As for competeing with sky sports I think it`s to earlier to judge as sky have been arround alot longer than ESPN and have a already established base from which to work from. I believe ESPN will be a big rival LONG TERM but as they get bigger they will ask virgin for more money which in turn will I believe result in ESPN becoming a premier channel.
