Bravo. This new Shrub is not only a serious improvement but actually looks professionally done as well, rather than an amateur box-ticking botch job like the last one...

You see all those transmitters outside that are on masts?
See any TV or mobile transmitters lying flat on the ground?
See all those hundreds of businesses with professionally installed wireless networks where they are all attached high on walls or the ceiling? Seen any who installed their wifi access points on the floor?

Sure, last time I did a "drive test" I found out of 380 Superhubs, all but one were on 2.4Ghz. However since consumer grade 5Ghz signals don't travel as far, that's not an entirely fair comparison.
Personally I'm still surprised when I see professionally installed wireless networks (hotspots, hotels, airports, etc.) that use 5Ghz, even then they are still extremely rare. There's only three I know of in Edinburgh. Two belong to universities.

Your post made me laugh, Flat routers have the transmitters upright still. So god knows why you made a comment saying I said otherwise.
The fritzbox has enclosed transmitters like the homehub and superhub and that one works reasonably well but that router is flat, I dont doubt transmitters inside casing can wotk well, what I do doubt is someone saying a transmitter enclosed will perform better than one that isnt with all else been equal.

Re: superhub 2
Yes - I forgot about that. 12 V multiplied by the current. Doh.

Re: superhub 2
For those of you wondering about power consumption, just measured my SH2 in router mode as follows:
Mains voltage was 246.2 V
Current taken 0.08 amps
Wattage 9.8 W
VA 20.2
Power factor 0.48
The conversions don't add up exactly as the mains voltage probably changed slightly while I was pressing buttons on the power meter
Hope that helps

If progers got the figures right (and I've no reason to think otherwise) then you're lookging at 1 unit of electricity every 4 days 6 hours (or there abouts).
I'll let you do the maths for a year!!
Cheers

Depends on your electricity price, at 15 pence per kwh (what I pay) your looking at £1.08 per month so £12.96 per year if my maths is correct. That is for the 10w progers has measured although I assume thats totally idle? Again the power draw will increase as the device is doing more work. Taking the 30w maximum the psu is capable of outputting to the device and accounting for inefficiency at 36w your looking at £3.89 per month or £46.86 per year.

Phone/TV masts are up high to clear as much clutter as possible, eg trees/bushes/houses/walls. I don't think you can look at a short range WiFi network in the same way. 5 inches isn't going to make that much difference, although then you're in danger then of starting to look at polarisation of antennas etc.
Good point about professional installs being up on the ceiling. The same wall mount points would work on the ceiling, so the point still stands. If the cables were in a sensible place for wall mounting it would be way better. That's why I'm about to buy a wireless AP with PoE, so I can screw it to the ceiling and still be able to reset it without a chair. That will replace the pitiful SH1 WiFi that I'm left using.
I can cope with it being terrible, I'll happily buy my own kit to get around that issue. I just want the ports in a sensible place so I can have it out of the way. Or, better still, just give me a modem...

Thanks Progers, much appreciated
Any chance of checking modem mode too ? - I doubt there will be much difference but it would be nice if there was.
* Any news on the USB ports usefulness ?

Deafeningly silent on that front. I've peeled the black tape covering mine though, just because I'm nosy.

Re: superhub 2
There is no power to the USB port, it doesn't charge my phone or anything so it is definitely disabled for now.

Re: superhub 2
Apparently I'm getting one of these as well when I upgraded my broadband package on the phone last night so will get to play with this after the tech installs it on Tuesday.
Though the £49 installation fee is excessive in my view for a modem swap out but they said will manually refund half of it afterwards. Last time I changed package on the phone I didn't encounter such a charge so a bit odd.
